C64MidRezzie
I opened an xbox that I picked up at the weekend last night. There was a problem with the disk drive as it kept opening an closing and wouldn't read a disk when it was held closed while the disk was spinning. I suspected a faulty drive but when I opened it I found that it was absolutely filthy inside and that something had leaked - I have attached pics - I think it's a 1.6 so I don't know what is leaking or if it is repairable - any help greatly appreciated. NoobInDistress
the capacitor (red circle) is know to leak and cause corrosion on the board. Remove the broken cap by either jiggling it back and forth or unsolder. youtube is your friend if you need info on how to do it. once the pos-cap is gone wipe off the goo with vinegar and q-tips and clean the area with isopropyl. no need to replace the cap as he xbox will run without it. downside: you gotta set the clock manually or synchronize over the web Edited July 16, 2019 by NoobInDistress typo (at least one i noticed)
C64MidRezzie
Does it look like a 1.6? I thought a 1.6 wouldn’t work if you remove the clock capacitor. I opened the dvd drive and there was goo all over the inside of it - I’m now beginning to think that someone spilt a drink on the console and that nothing has leaked - could I be right? i cleaned the dvd drive with alcohol and q tips but it still won’t read disks
Tomos
It’s not a 1.6, you can tell since there are still spots for the extra ram chips. It may be a good idea to remove the whole motherboard (it’s pretty easy) so you can clean under it as well after you remove the capacitor.

Ging3rguy
It will be one of the traces causing the problem with the eject, caused by the leaky cap.

Ging3rguy
The band just opens the disk drive

I'd give it a good scrub and relube the rails
C64MidRezzie
Okay so I cleaned it up - I haven’t removed the clock cap yet. I put it all back together and it says error 16. It loads to the Xbox splash but Microsoft does not appear - the screen goes black for a few minutes before error 16 appears - it no longer has the softmod because I rebuilt the drive using Hot Swap with IDE Pc and HDM V1.9 - did it perfectly but it still shows error 16 - would removing the faulty clock cap help? Thanks
C64MidRezzie
To answer my own question - I removed the clock capacitor and no more error 16 - instead it load to the clock - the hot swap worked and I had a fresh MS Dash - off to softmod - thanks again for all the help guys - the circle around the cap above was brill -
