Another One Bites the Dust

Recommended Posts

I bought 10 used xboxes and I would love to resurrect them.

Maybe you could help out as the most sites are down that contain proper information about the OGXBOX.

First one tries to boot 2 times, the red/orange flashing.

I soldered a Aladdin XT on it, the Modchip flashes red as well, but no change in behaviour ...

Any ideas ?

Not sure why the modchip would be flashing too.

Red/orange is a RAM error. Make sure there are no bits on conductive material between pins of the RAM chips or any of the traces leading to them. It could be one of the DDR DRAM chips has gone bad too.  There are 4 on top and 4 more in the bottom of the motherboard.

Thank you.
I always buy broken and neglected boxes and try to put new love into them.

I have a set of good RAM chips I’d be willing to get you for shipping cost. Also got a board to go with it if you need the spare SMD components.

I’m not aware of where you can source those chips at this point beyond other dead units.

amazon got'em as well. 10 pcs for approx $33

at least the the numbers on the chips are identical to the oneb i got on a v1.6 box.

can't tell whether they worked though since i effed up soldering them to a 1.1 box

Ok thanks.

So next Box problem.

Error 13 & 16.

Drive is locked.

When I try to mount it the HDD in another Box as slave drive with Chimp I get serious I/O errors.

I cannot boot from disc in the box , before booting I get the 16 or 13 Errors.

I just chipped the box.

Any ideas ?

It sounds like it could be corrupted files or knackered hdd. Install a chip and see if you can get into the hdd and check the dash and files are okay possibly ftp over ones that you know are good.

soz just saw you had added a chip, can you ftp to it?

I have 5 fragging XBOXes left, in which I already installed Modchip but that didn´t change a thing at all.

I guess the boxes are just dead.

Received an Xbox for spares I bought off Ebay. The thing I wanted it for was the working disc drive and all seems OK with that although it is my least favourite Philips VAD6011/21.
The Xbox was listed as having error 16 - which it does so I was prepared just to swap out the disc drive but the rest is in pretty good nick, a bit of dirt and fluff on the the MB but all cleanable so I'm now thinking about actually trying to get it working again.
But no extra cost so I'm not going to fit a chip or buy/build an eeprom reader (the eeprom of course is unknown) and I've been researching the best way of doing this.
Rocky5 in another forum about a year ago posted about using Chimp 261812 on another Xbox and hot-swapping in the error 16 HDD (set to cable select) and using Chimp's Fix Error 16 option. Sounded good until the guy who was asking had trouble getting the HDD either to unlock or be recognised by Chimp.
The solution that apparently worked was to use an installer disc instead of Chimp 261812 and actually hot-swap the error 16 HDD in for the main HDD and use HeXEn or whatever to install a softmod on that before swapping it back.
Another solution I found suggested hot-swapping to an IDE USB adapter/housing and using either Xplorer360 or XBHDM USB to install a dashboard. I've had 'fun' with that sort of thing before and almost gave up trying to get the hot-swapped HDD to be recognised by Xplorer360 before it actually worked.
So what method has worked for anyone else here wanting to fix an error 16 and is there some other, cost free, solution I've overlooked?
BTW all the information I have suggests this is a Xbox v1.2: Conexant VE, Philips disc drive, 21st Feb 2003, China but I know there is difficulty distinguishing between the v1.2 and v1.3. I'd like it to be a v1.3 and then I'd have a full house but the evidence and my waters tell me this is a v1.2.

if u have a v1.6 that is connected with a component cable(green, blue and red cables) then u probably know there are a few games that are scrambled if u try to play them in 480p and u have to set the xbox to 480i to unscramble the the picture. here is a simple workaround that i just discovered.
1.power on your xbox and pull the power cord with the system on.(the step may not be needed but it sometimes it)
      2. plug your xbox in, hold a controller in one hand and hit the power button with the other, then click in the left and right sticks along with holding down the L and R buttons and hold all 4 buttons until u get to the xbox desktop(make certain the system doesn't have a game in it so it will boot to the desktop).
      3. if u did things correctly u should see the screen flicker and go into 480p mode as the desktop is coming up. hit the INFO button on your tv remote to make certain that the display is in 480p mode(and not 480i).
      4. make certain the 480p mode is set to YES in the system settings menu and then throw in a game and see if it works. i used fable(non-lost chapters version) and it worked perfectly.
