Yes, I have used a standard cable in the past but you will get less delay and it will not just hang there which you get with some hdd SATA drives.

Can I use any SATA hard drive and I found a 80Pin IDE Cable in an old Dell Pentium Optiplex PC - so hopefully that will work or am I better off buying a new fresh cable?

Hi - thanks my 500Gb SATA drive isn’t listed at all - I took it from s Sky+ box - the model is Samsung ST3500312CS - anyone any experience with this drive?

No, but compatibility issues mostly arise from drives that can’t be locked. This is actually part of the SATA specification, so I’m not aware of any SATA drives with this issue. If you TSOP/chip this is a moot point anyway as the drive doesn’t need to be locked.
