>Easy XDK Installer V1.4.1<

"Legitimate Edition"

-------------------------------------------------------------

Easy-XDK-Installer-Box-Art.png

This is an easy way to turn your retail console into a debug kit. There are two main options:

1. Install the XDK dashboard as an "app", meaning that you will have the option to load the dash as an app which will be marked "XDK Launcher" in your apps list. This will boot the dash by booting a Debug version of Cerbios through PBL, which forces the load of the XDK dashboard.

2 "Standalone mode" wipes your C and E partitions and turns the console into a full-on debug kit. The installer also provides the means to flash a debug enabled Cerbios bios through this option.

This should cover most case uses. However I will add features and modify the installer over time as I receive feedback.

Also included is every single piece of software imaginable on the PC side. Everything from Windows XP itself, to Visual Studio 2003, to the XDK installer, and of course, the VMWare image is linked below.

The XDK version numbers are a lie. 5849.16 is the latest version of the XDK.

Please remember to download and install the virtualbox additions ISO. This makes the VM experience much more pleasurable and XP is better able to work with the VM software, also installing graphics drivers!

I also invite you to try to use this installer after creating yourself a fully fledged development kit. It works perfectly for mine! :)

Please do not use vx.dxt in your "DXT" folder. It serves no purpose and causes some things to not load and to crash.

1.4.1

-Changed XML commentary, installer messaging and structure,
as well as finishing readme's for each section and adding further
explanation of operations so that people can have a better
understanding of what is being done and how.
-Added ability to say no to flashing Cerbios at the end of the
Standalone installs. It is a hardcoded debug bios that is flashed.
However, there is a debug ini that is installed anyway, so if you don't
want to flash a hardcoded debug Cerbios for any reason, you will be
given the choice not to flash and the debug ini will still enable you to
boot into the XDK launcher.
-Fixed a bug that copied the incorrect bios to HDD when selecting option
to flash back to retail bios under "Back to Retail" section.

1.4.0.

- Fixed a few more videos. DAMN XMV files. -.-
- Added a boot menu where you have the option to launch this
  installer in different modes:
-- Non BFM DHCP mode (Default!).
-- Non BFM Static IP mode.
  -- BFM DHCP mode.
  -- BFM Static IP mode.
- This disc and all the XBE's are now usable with the ENDGAME DVD Launcher
  if needed.
- Added the option to install the 5849 XDB for XBox as App and Standalone.
You now have the option to use use 4627 or 5849 as an App or Standalone if
  you like.
-Removed vx.dxt (VerifierX) from 5849 XDK installs. It causes crashes with things like
XBlast and PBL. It was causing the installer to crash when flashing with XBlast and
trying to use the PBL "Retail" mode in the XDK Launcher.

Full instal guide? Like if burned discs are usable for this or how else?

Just burn the iso with imgburn and run it in the xbox. It has scripting that will take care of the job for you. It also has all the software you will need on the PC side, although I need to immediately post the link to the VMware XP/XDK image that's out there. It makes the process much easier if you wish to take the VM route (not my cup o tea. I like my setups difficult and impractical, lol.).

Actually I will probably make an ISO of the PC-side software that isn't XISO so that it can just be inserted into the PC. I'll do so tonight. Should make things much easier for people.

Thank you for all of this Bowlsnapper. It is an incredibly valuable asset to have and again thanks for putting this together

And MY thanks goes to dardestiny for being resourceful and thinking of many things to improve what he's done already.

The debug Dashboard works very nice, thank you for sharing. Can someone explain how i can add Games or Apps from my HDD to the launch menu of the debug menu? Wanted to try some of the unreleased Games which require debug BIOS...

Really any executables in the "E:\Devkit\" folder can show up, as they are scanned when the dashboard loads. I would just create a folder called "Games" or whatever seems appropriate to you in the "devkit" folder and place game files in their own respective folders. Keep in mind that retail, signed executables cannot run when launched from the dashboard. This is not really intended to be a main dashboard. If you would like to install it as an "app" dashboard, the option is in the installer to do so. Or you could conversely load it as your main dash (also an option in the installer) and then use Pheonix Bios Loader to boot into a regular dashboard/modded setup, which is how I have my system set up currently... even though it's in pieces due to being in mid-construction right now 😛

Is there any plans to make signed and unsigned games playable?

It will be made easier to go into a modded dash with a retail BFM bios from the XDK dashboard and just launch games from XBMC, UnleashX, etc.. In order to launch retail games from the XDK dash, it's kind of a pain (it can be done a certain way) and honestly would not really serve a purpose.

I extracted the ISO and modified the ZIP files to contain a 5849 dashboard instead of a 4627 dashboard. Am I allowed to repost the ISO?

I needed to ask for permission to repost the ISO

This is actually planned for a future release, so I do appreciate your contribution, although it is coming soon, among other fixes and additions. I have planned a lot of organizational and bios management changes and a section dedicated to my Devkit design, the DVT-5. So check back here this weekend! I'm excited! :)

Thanks! Does this build work on retail hardware and emulation?

Untitled.png

Yes It works for both, I am going to release a hotfix that asks if you would like to flash a bios at the end of the standalone install, as opposed to just telling you it's going to. This (trying to boot XBlast) DOES sometimes result in lockups in Xemu but it isn't necessary to flash, as the installer installs a debug ini anyway and any retail version of Cerbios hardcoded to observe the ini will see it and boot into the XDK launcher.

I will also create a tutorial detailing how to get it working with XP (VM or real) to have a full coding environment with no physical Xbox. :)

Does the 5849 application installer require a modchip, or can it be installed with a softmod?

There is a way to do it with a softmod, and upon further research and advice from others, it may not be as simple as just installing it as an "application" due to softmodding using a Shadow C partition. It can be done this way:

But it is risky, since you will not have a recovery option if your dashboard files are fuxored. I do not recommend this until I have come up with a way to do it safely. There is also the matter of your 64MB of RAM. I do not clearly know how the XDK environment will behave when running on half the memory it was intended to. I am researching this as well, since I am genuinely curious. I may start a separate thread to address it. I have asked rocky5 for advice on this, and I hope he is able to help bring some understanding to this whole thing.

I also found this on reddit as well:

"There are also softmod options. I have my (1.6) xbox set so it boots into a regular softmod, but I can launch Phoenix Bios Loader from the dashboard and it will boot it into "development mode" if you will. It's quite a safe option. I used Yoshihiro's bios.

Let me also just second a few things others have said. Do not run the recovery disk or the remote recovery tool, it will break your Xbox. Amongst other things it will try to reflash your bios.

What I think I did was extract the recovery disk (or tool, not sure) and manually place the files in the right directory. I'm trying to look up the steps for this, but haven't found it yet."

-------

So there seem to be mixed reports. I would not attempt this until I have a solid answer.

What do you plan to do with the XDK Launcher once you have it installed?

Does the softmod method work on other Xbox revisions?

To answer your question: I'll try to port lego island to the Xbox

Hear me out.

It can be done, but if anything corrupty is done to your HDD, you are FUCKED if you try it, and bricked. It is a risky thing to do. I don't recommend it. Also, if you're capable of porting a badass windows game, then you may understand that having 64MB to debug a D3D application that will almost certainly make use of all of it will be VERY problematic. I don't recommend using a stock, softmodded xbox. I think you should get a hold of a hardmodded (TSOP will work) motherboard with 128MB of RAM. If you are unable to do this yourself, either I or others can do this for you. I may be able to sell you an xbox with 128MB installed and a HDD set up for the XDK in standalone. Then you can install the VM and start doing it the way it was meant to be done. :)
