Leave the modchip.  No need to softmod.  Easier to install a new HDD as it doesn't have to be locked with a modchip installed.

Others will most likely say something different. :)

What X2 BIOS are you using? 

There may be something newer to use.

Update: You shouldn't (can't) have both installed at the same time.  If so, you generally get a black screen when you expect the replacement dashboard to show up.

I guess it depends mostly on what chip you have. Personally, unless it’s a 1.6, I would pull the chip and replace with a solid TSOP, then zero the HDD key. It is easier to install a replacement drive with a chip, but if you have a spare chip running around, it also makes it that much easier to recover from a drive failure or some terrible BIOS issue, or other mods in the future. 

 

Tl;dr, if this is your only system and don’t plan future mods, leave it alone.
