  1. I believe I seen a Reddit post couple days ago by KaosEngineer touching on this topic the post was sometime back, I'm wondering if it's practical today to even attempt or even flash an pc optical drive. I am aware that you can of course get parts from other consoles.. I asked this out of curiosity as I lack the information and experience on the topic.
  2. Hi everyone. I have a 2001 model Xbox with the Thompson drive. It's struggling to read certain game disks (or not reading them at all) despite the disks being in great condition. Other games will run just fine. I already tried doing the pot tweak on the laser and it helped for about 3 hours until it was crashing with disk read errors again. I believe the drive is on its way out. My question is, what is the best way to go about fixing it? It seems like the newer Samsung drives are supposedly more reliable, but they are extremely hard to find. Does anyone sell repair kits for these Thompson drives? Would it be possible to use a newer SATA DVD drive with a SATA-IDE adapter?
  3. I am not talking about the laser or motors going bad, I am talking about the board itself. Bad boards can cause a Xbox to frag. Sometimes a drive will cause the Xbox to no longer quickboot XBlast chip. Which components on the board can cause these issues? I know that a new and better method to fix Gamecube drives are to replace the capacitors over touching the pot. Is there anything that can be repaired on a bad board on one of the Xbox drives?
  4. The xbox dvd drive is SDG-605B version B it scratches discs. Refer to discScratches.JPG the scratches are not circular. I am trying to pin point the root cause of the damage. The xbox must of been dropped. The optical pickup head must be causing the scratches but I don't see any raised sharp edges that would cause those marks. The dvd drive reads both cd's and dvd's but they get damaged in the process. The xbox original is TSOP so the only use I have for the drive is formatting the hdd. I thought I would disassemble the dvd drive and compare it to an identical drive. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1B0_VHvgu-ACzN3azkw6Aq4r6GdUQbuLW?usp=drive_link A.JPG is the dvd drive scratching discs B.JPG is a reference drive identical to A.JPG
  5. So, I can't download anything until 15 posts, so I have a question. I think my v1.0 ide hard drive is dying...I was playing dance dance and the system became very slow and sluggish to dance pad presses. (The pad worked fine on the ps2) I did open up the xbox console for the first time, cleaned up the board, chopped out the clock capacitor (a very small amount of leakage), applied new thermal paste to the chips. The fans seemed like they were functioning fine. But..... I'm curious about the hard drive. Can I just clone the hard drive to a new hard drive and call it a day? Must I hard or soft mod the system before putting in a new hard drive?
  6. Hello Everyone. I am kind of new/kind of old to the scene, as I have an rev 1.6 Xbox that I bought brand new in 2006, softmodded and installed a 160gb harddrive, which is(was?) limited to 137Gb useable space, copied all my bought games to it, threw in a couple emulators, and then just used it on and off and basically forgot anything involved in the process to the mists of time. Recently it wouldn't power on, so I replaced the common 5 3300uF caps that were leaking, and it was good to go. My brain noted that the 16 year old IDE hard drive will not run forever, and I should look at upgrading to a SATA configuration. Due to the time gap, very old versions of software, I have now read so much conflicting information at this point am not sure what to do in 2021. I no longer have the original drive. I don't appear to have an image of either drive (8gb or 160gb) in any of my backups either. My fuzzy memory says this is bad because of linked keys. I do not have a PATA usb adaptor, or computer with PATA. I have an Xbox to USB adaptor, but I don't think I have a compatible thumb drive. Based on my research I've ordered the "correct" Startech SATA/PATA adaptor. The existing drive already has an 80 pin cable. I do have ftp access without issue. I'm attaching a 2 screenshots of my drive/system info, my questions are: Is that key in the screenshot all I need? If not what is the best way to go about backing up the drive/board key "Just in case" things go bad. And is Chimp (https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/wiki/chimp/) still the best way to clone it to a new drive in 2021? I undoubtedly will have more questions, but backing up is my first priority, and once I have a confirmed backup I will be much more comfortable playing with it, and hopefully updating the various software I have loaded. Any "critical hints" or gotchas would be appreciated as well. v
  7. I got a job lot recently of some consoles - and all of them have buggered Thomson drives I've tried adjusting pots, tried booting multiple burnt copies of HeXen and OGXBOXInstaller etc. but all seem to just hang on the Linux screen. Any suggestions for what can be done? Can a HDD be setup outside the console? I have FATXplorer - and I know Eaton was looking at adding more support for the OG Xboxes however I think these are all still in beta. Cheers guys
  8. Noticed that my DVD drive is having a had hard time reading discs. I did clean the laser with 91% alcohol. Is there any way to calibrate the lasers power?
  9. Hi - I softmodded my xbox original five years ago and didn't use it much because of a house move. I took it out last night and realised that the upgraded 250GB drive is very noisy and sounds like it is dying. I upgraded before using Chimp. I am wondering can I use Chimp again with another 250GB hard drive or does the next hard drive have to be bigger than the 250GB drive? I have looked for an answer on google but all search returns related to upgrading to a larger drive from the stock drive - there doesn't seem to be anything about swapping a drive for another drive that is equal in size. Kind Regards
  10. Hi guys I have a softmodded xbox and would like to create a backup hard drive in case the softmodded drive in the console takes a dump! I know that the xbox hard drive is nulled! I also ftp'd the E:\ folder wich contains the eeprom.bin file to my pc for backup. Can I just ftp all the folders in the xbox hard drive to my pc to create a backup of entire drive? (I use filzilla to ftp files)
  11. More curious than want to put into practice but after I load a game from disk onto the Xbox Hard Drive, it might be nice to create an ISO as a backup if the game disk fails. I was thinking some kind of program on a PC connected via the network to the Xbox.
