  1. Hi First of all: I'm completely new to OG Xbox modding. I have three boxes (and hopefully a fourth on the way soon): The first one: My original Xbox I bought way back. Last time I used it, it worked... but that was before my oldest child (now 16) was born! It is dated 2002-04-04 which according to https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Versions makes it a version 1.0. Opening it also reveals a fan on the gpu and the controller daughterboard. The clock capacitor luckily looks in pretty good condition. No leakage. The second one: This one I got second hand sometime around 2006. That was the time I got a second Steel Battalion set with LoC. Since I don't have any friends the only way I could enjoy multiplayer was by having a second set myself... This one is dated 2003-07-27 which makes it a version 1.4. Or maybe a version 1.3 if I use the YWW from the serial number ("5197553 33005"). I also opened this one and found the clock capacitor in good shape What's important about these two Xboxes is that they are completely vanilla. I have made no modifications to them at all. Other than piercing the stickers to be able to open the cases for what I am describing in this post. The reason I have kept them this way for so long is due to the Tekki unlock code Capcom released in 2005. Both consoles have it. The third one: I actually got this a while back because I wanted to build a dev kit. I never got around to it. Probably because I found out that it's a version 1.6b and so didn't have pads for the extra 64MB RAM. This one was modded when I got it. I can only believe that it's softmodded because there is no trace of extra chips or wires anywhere. It has UnleashX installed. Ok. So what I want to do now: 1. Remove the clock caps from the two old Xboxes. I believe I can just do that without any consequences (other than the clock requesting to be set every time I turn them on) even when the consoles or unmodded, correct? 2. With the caps out of the way I want to turn them on to check them. Or should I do that before removing the caps? The things I have read about the caps have made me a little weary of turning them on beforehand. 3. Backup all the HDDs to preserve them. This step is what worries me the most. Can it be done without modifying the first two boxes? If I have to modify them, what alterations will be made to the HDDs? I want to preserve them as pristine as possible. But also only if it's meaningful. If I can make a clone without modifying the boxes but the drive image is useles then I of course don't want to do it. What would you suggest I do here? 4. Whether or not I need to mod them to backup the HDDs I want to mod them anyway. It seems to be the only way to make sure the consoles remain usable in the future. My initial plan is to softmod them with Splinter Cell. (The third one is modded so no need to) 5. Replace all the HDDs with newer ones. Preferably SSDs. I have too many 120GB ones lying around. And then storing the original HDDs. The HDD in the third one seems to be the original so whoever modded it didn't replace the HDD. Anything I should be aware of? Something I am missing/overlooking? Especially with regards to step 3. When looking at the softmodding guide I see steps about nulling the HDD keys. It says "optional" so given that I want to preserve the disks as original as possible is this something I should think about?
  2. Redherring32 (of OpenTendo fame) has been putting in some research into bypassing the need for a clock capacitor on the 1.6 revision Xbox; unlike the prior models a 1.6 will not boot without it. By removing R7P3 and R7P6 current limiting resistors which go to the positive leg of the clock cap and then connecting 3v3 standby voltage to that same leg, you can remove it entirely and still have a functioning system.
  3. as a result of having a bad accident I no longer have the ability to tinker and mod. I have given some away to family - but have 2 complete modded systems in great shape. I am unsure but there may be 500 gb drives in them. I have a tub of parts, power supplies, board(?) case and cables. I am keeping a couple for myself, of course... I am going for best offer and will send pics upon request. I would ship to canada preferred but will also ship us - I won't gouge for shipping or this stuff. they are in fantastic shape. I am in Alberta. sad to sell but it is sadder to not be able to mod any longer. Contact for more info. Thanks
  4. Hey guys, so I replaced what I THOUGHT was a clock capacitor (one of these 1F, 2.5V caps) on my 1.6 Xbox but that did nothing to solve the timekeeping issue. Is this how 1.6 boxes keep time? If not, how can I solve this problem? Can I even?
  5. Hello all! I’ve been a console modder for about 10-12 years. I’ve done hard mods on Xbox 360s and have practiced a bit of trace repair on other consoles like PS3 and other devices. I had a few questions about some issues I’m having with my side-of-the-road OGXbox. I kept finding this website on my Google searching and figured this is the place to be!
  6. I cant seem to find these anywhere, or if I see a friendtech pop up it costs $1,200. I am from the us. Technically an amature solder-er could upgrade the ram, but from what I understand there is an interposer board between a Pentium 3 -> xbox cpu socket so no ammount of soldering skills would fix this. All I can find about the interposer is a guy who is building one but have not seen any updates for about 6 months. Understandable with the current global situation. https://www.retrorgb.com/xbox-1-4-ghz-interposer-board-by-kekule.html -> https://ko-fi.com/chimericsystems I understand these things are rare, and will continue to get rare-er until they are $10,000 + or just dont exist. Is there anyone who can sell a fully loaded system w/ cap replace, hdd upgrade, ram upgrade, cpu upgrade for a reasonable price? Is there development in this scene? Everything I have found pretty much stopped in 2018, then briefly flared when Chimeric Systems talked about an interposer board, and then died down likely due to the virus. Anyone have any ideas?
  7. Getting out of modding, I have 5 xboxes left each with 2tb drives. Message me for more info, us only.
  8. as the title says, i have a fuckton of xboxes i modded with 2tb drives that i wanna get rid of. for more info, dm me, thanks.
  9. I just softmodded my second Xbox but I’m having an interesting issue I didn't experience on the first. None of my demo discs will work. I tried a handful of Official Xbox Magazine demo discs. I also tried the “Exhibition Demo Disc”. My copy of Sega GT 2002/Jet Set Radio Future (which basically functions like a glorified demo disc) also appears to be affected. Trying to play any of these either directly from the DVD drive or from a ripped copy on the HDD causes XBCM to restart. It’ll act like it’s going to load for a few seconds and then it just reboots. I’ve tried dozens of other games in my collection and so far have had no issues. The problem seems to be isolated to my demo discs and copy of GT 2002/JSRF. I have used these problematic discs in my first softmodded Xbox with no issues. In fact, I have many hours logged in JSRF on my first Xbox. I should also mention that I used a different method for softmodding this time around. My first Xbox was softmodded a few years ago using SID. For my second Xbox (the problematic one), I used Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool. The problematic console has a 1.4 motherboard. The working Xbox has a 1.0. I don't know if these points really matter, but I figure more information can't hurt. Any help is appreciated!
