  1. Hey all. I have a recent acquisition of an OG Xbox with a Samsung DVD drive that is properly jammed. It's a Samsung Model SDG-605. The front white tab is completely loose. I've tried to pop the tray loose via the small white tab on the bottom of the DVD drive and cannot get this thing to budge. I reviewed the disassembly guide here: https://web.archive.org/web/20050406225941/http://llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/Samsung_DVD_Complete_Disassembly.htm Is there any way to get this tray out without getting it fully extended? Any ideas / suggestions?
  2. I'm posting this here as I am at the end of my rope with trying to diagnose this issue. I have 23 original Xbox's and this fault ONLY happens on hard modded systems that have the Samsung DVD drive (both the SDG-605B and SDG-605F). I will give a little information first on the type of hard mods I performed to each of the systems(they are all identical). modchip: Xblast Jafar/Aladdin ide wire: 40 pin 80 wire 24" long ide to sata: startech adapter(set to master) hdd: 3tb wd red pro or 4tb hgst ultrastar RAM: stock 64mb(1.6 models and 2 1.4s) or 128mb upgrade(all other models) console capacitors: all replaced on both the motherboard and PSU with Panasonic FM(mouser) or Nichicon (console5 kit) DVD drive caps: all replaced on Samsung drives only BIOS: Cerbios 2.3.1 UDMA5 (tried UDMA2 did not help) Xbox motherboard revision: I have all revisions from 1.0 to 1.6b The issue I am having is that XBMC4Gamers gives the DVD "Busy" signal when I try to boot a game(game is brand new, no scratches), and the stock 5960 dashboard will just give a disc read error. The error can be fixed by simply rebooting the console into xblast OS then loading cerbios from there. Once the console boots again the game reads fine first try and works without stutters(the lasers are fine). The issue will happen again if the xbox is turned off then unplugged and allowed to sit a bit. If I turn it on again using the power button (instead of using disc button to boot to xblast first) the issue will happen again until I go back into xblast and reboot the bios. Also, the game will boot if I have the disc in the drive when first turning on the console. It only doesn't work when trying to insert it after reaching the dashboard (stock or xbmc). This issue only happens on the samsung drives. I have many thomson, philips and even 1 hitachi drive and the issue does not happen there. On first boot with these drives, the games always load first try without having to reboot the console. I can rotate these samsung drives between consoles and the issue follows them to whichever console I put them into. I am convinced that this is not a hardware issue because of this but some problem with either the BIOS or xbmc4gamers. I really hope someone can help me here as I have no idea what the issue can be and troubleshooting this had led me nowhere so far.
  3. Ok hi from Finland. I'm repairing and modding a Xbox og 1.6 with this samsung psu. The 3.3v and 5v stand-by voltages come and go, i think there is something to do with heat because it worked for a while when i resoldered almost every single solderjoint on the board. I have replaced the 2 big caps and that did fix the original issue of completely dead. I have replaced all the bigger caps on the mobo. Mobo works just fine when the psu gives the power needed. Can someone point me in the right direction? I have been stuck with this for over a month and i'm doing this free for my friend. EDIT: Just tried to measure the psu once again and had no 5v. Then i plugged mobo connector back in and plugged ac plug back on and the f*cking thing works again.
  4. Sorry guys for asking ... I want to do the Samsung 616 F/T Mod and i was looking for a proper Samsung Drive on ebay and other platforms ... But .. I just read some manuals and description and Version mentioned are Samsung 616 F/T only. When i search the internet i just find Samsung 616 drives, pictures, manual, type label. So my stupid question ... before buying some drives that will not fit the requirement ... How can i Check and assure that the drive is a Samsung 616 F/T ... I thing (or i never found) the version mentioned on the type label .. Sorry for the stupid question ... Thanks and Cheers
  5. Getting error 12 and I feel like I've tried everything... cleaned the laser, the pcb, checked my wires and connections, everything seems good the drive even seems to work fine lol. I've got a mod chip on the way but it won't be here until March sometime probably this is super annoying.. although the laser resistance is reading 3.6k no matter how much I try to adjust it it seems stuck at the resistance. Everything else seems good even checked all the resistors on the pcb by the ide cable. Here's a video of the error code and the drive https://streamable.com/12oewm heres a pic of the only other thing that looks possibly damaged https://i.ibb.co/7yRzBqB/327869220-5958167487563144-7908614504502997769-n.jpg it's the right corner of the pcb attached to the laser but its hard to tell bcause I've never seen another one. If I can't fix this I'm going to have to wait at least a month for the Stellar mod to show up Somebody help me please!!
  6. hello, i am trying to repair this drive, it has been opened before, i may have done something wrong previously but i do not know what is causing this. this drive is connected to a 1.3 xbox. i can provide a video of this issue here
  7. I have an unmodded 1.4 Xbox with a Samsung SDG-605B drive that won't read discs. The drive sounds like it's trying to read a disc, but then gets kicked out to the Xbox menu. I've tried all the usual things: cleaning the laser, greasing the rails/gears, adjusting the pots (anywhere from +10% to -20% of the original resistance) with no luck. Determined to get this fixed, I ordered a few replacement lasers from: https://alltroniccomputer.com.sg/products/cd-dvd-xbox-optical-pickup-sohd16-soh-d16-xbox360 My original laser pickup is SOH-DR16S, but it should be interchangeable with this one-- SOH-D16. I ordered 2 just to be sure and neither one of them worked. And yes I desoldered the anti-static blob and played with the pots. I read on another thread that the SDG-605F resistor arrays NR601 - NR606 can commonly fail. I checked the analogous resistors on the SDG-605B but they seem to measure the correct resistances. Lastly, I swapped DVD drives with a working Xbox and sure enough the working Xbox won't read discs, while the broken Xbox is fixed. So I'm pretty sure the problem is isolated to the DVD drive. There is such a scarcity of information on this drive on the internet and this forum seems to be the best resource. Any ideas on what it could be/what I could do next?
  8. Send me a PM and let me know if you are interested. I have at least 5 available.
  9. Hello eve Hello everybody; I bought an xbox with chip as in the picture (an aladdin, but I don't know the exact model). As soon as I turn it on I see the EvoX logo in the left corner, but as a bios entry, it gives me "unknown". Naturally the burned games start. I decided to put a ssd of at least 500Gb, a samsung evo, so I bought an 80 pin ide cable and a startech adapter (40 pin ide to sata converter). Inserted the dvd of truhexen 2021, I inserted the sequence and formatted everything; the problem is that it never detects me more than 120 gb on F and not even G. Using Xbpartitioner 1.3 FROM TRUHEXEN seems to work, but not and if i put all space (458,31GB) in F it give "ER"....if i split F and G, when i restart the dash does not see G and F is 120gb...moreover, If I launch xbpartition from ssd, it gave me error "LBA48info not found!Custom partition will not work with this bios" (but from dvd start). Installing the new dashes (and basic program) and launching unleashX dash, I see the bios entry "EvoxM8 (1.6) and xboxV 1.4" .... do I have to flash the bios?
  10. I haven't used my og Xbox for a while I decided I wanted it set up and to play it again did all of that and it goes to boot up gives me a display but shows the contact service center with error code 12. I looked up the code and it points to the dvd drive. I've opened it cleaned it and still no luck. What are my options would a hard mod and no dvd bios be a better fix than replacing the drive? Or would buying a parts machine be better. Thanks Kyran.
  11. Hi guys TLDR: - My xbox's Samsung disc drive no longer works, already tried the usual things. - Am I using the correct replacement laser? - have I overlooked anything for optical drive repair? - Can I still mod my xbox with an OpenXenium chip + can I properly upgrade the hard drive without ever needing the disc drive again (eg for running Hexen or OGXbox installation Disc, or can I use another way to properly set up a 2tb hard drive I've got for the planned upgrade). ________________________ Full version. Hi guys. I've got a stock OG PAL Xbox (v1.1?) that doesn't read any kind of discs anymore. I found this out 3 weeks ago when I took my xbox out for the first time after a few months. It doesn't ever give disc errors. It does not have any hard or soft mods applied yet, but I've got an openxenium chip on hand ready for when I eventually get to modding (also have a 2tb Seagate Barracuda drive set aside as an upgrade). I'll add that I've already removed the clock capacitor almost 2 years ago when I bought the xbox and had zero associated issues. I usually run my xbox via RGB scart on my CRT, and it previously ran without any problems. My OG xbox has a Samsung drive: SDG-605 version B, and originally has a SOH-D16 laser. I initially tried the usual stuff and none of it worked : - cleaned the laser lens - tried lowering the DVD Potentiometer resistance through various ranges (1800ohms from factory, lowered down to 830ohms testing every 100 or so Ohms) - checked the lubricants and deep cleaned the console for any dust/debris. - Eject button and disc tray works fine. I can't find any spare optical drive replacements in the UK currently, so I opted to replace the laser assembly. I purchased the replacement from AliExpress, though the laser model number I received was actually SOH-DR16S, rather than the SOH-D16. The listing stated it was for SOH-D16, but I received the SOH-DR16S instead (I can't seem to find any of the former anywhere). I couldn't find any confirming information about whether these laser assemblies are completely cross compatible in my DVD drive (but all the connector assemblies and ribbon connectors seem to fit perfectly fine). I also followed Bahamutfan64's reddit post and the linked guide to try and prepare the laser for best compatibility*: - swapped the white houseing onto the new laser - desoldered the static protection/storage solder bridges for both potentiometers (and tried my best to minimise static discharge risk when working with the lasers after the safety bridges were removed) - reassembled the laser assembly into the Samsung drive and removed the blue lens protection film - cleaned the lens with 99% IPA to remove any residue from the protective film. - recorded both potentiometers' factory resistances. The CD pot was 800ohms from factory, whilst the DVD pot's factory was 2010ohms. These values failed to boot any of my games or CDs. - I then gradually tweaked and tested my DVD pot down to about 1240ohms, testing at roughly every 100ohm intervals, and still couldn't boot into any of my games. I'm not sure if I should go all the way down to 800ohms onnthe DVD pot on a "brand new" laser. Here's how the Xbox mostly seemed to usually behave with the new laser (and even with the old laser with Pot tweaks): with the game disc inside, the eject button would keep flashing. At the same time the optical drive motor would try a few short bursts of spinning the disc, followed by a longer spin. After this longer spin it gives up reading the disc and the eject button stops flashing. I don't know if this is a sign of the optical drive's spindle motor failing, but I think it may be unlikely. I don't get any error messages, and the xbox simply remains in the green home menu screen (even last year when I had occasional failed disc reads, I would never receive error messages). I tried a range of different known working games and CDs to no success. I want some help and was wondering where to go from here. I have a few questions: Is there any way of telling whether the optical drive's PCB is gone? There aren't any obvious signs such as leaky caps or burnt componenents. I don't own an oscilloscope or any really seriously fancy equipment. The ribbon cables are all intact and I've even tried cleaning all of their contacts and reseating. All the necessary moving parts/gears appear/feel lubricated (doesn't appear overlubed) and the laser's worm gear/motor seems to be working fine. The eject/disc tray motor and associated parts also seem to be working. Is my replacement laser assembly actually compatible? I actually tried ordering 2 laser assemblies, sadly I received SOH-DR16S and not SOH-D16. Would these differences in lasers even matter for my Samsung Drive? They both appear identical. As far as I know, I believe an SOH-D16 can be used in place of a SOH-DR16S, but not sure if it works the other way around for my specific context. Would it be worth me trying the second brand new SOH-DR16S laser as well? I have no way if telling if these new lasers were dead on arrival. If I fail with disc drive repair, could I still successfully install the openxenium chip without ever needing the disc drive? Is it possible to run the OG xbox without an optical drive ever again and still get the key modchip benefits? Ie changing the bios/nand file, upgrading to a 2tb hard drive from stock (and boot my backups from this drive). I know that the Hexen disc/OGXBox installation disc would still require an optical drive, but could I still run these (or at least their features) without an optical disc drive? Is Hexen/OGXbox install disc even necessary in my setup is using OpenXenium? Ideally I'd like to avoid grabbing a second xbox just to salvage a working DVD drive that will likely fail soon anyway. I'm also aware with a modchip I can grab a PC dvd drive to play CD/DVD/burned media if absolutely needed (sadly I don't have one of these to hand, and I won't ever be able to use this to boot my original discs). Sorry for the long post, I wanted to include as much detail as possible including everything I've already tried and considered. *Guides I followed for laser replacement: https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/phuhy3/samsung_sohdr16_laser_replacement/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share http://fillwithcoolblogname.blogspot.com/2011/02/xbox-dvd-laser-replacement.html?m=1
  12. Hi guys, I've got tons of Xbox originals over last 2 years and i always see the same problem with Samsung drives - they are not reading at all. Tweaking pot doesn't help. Laser beam is there, it is not weak. Lens is not dirty, tried to clean all of them. My guess was maybe these are capacitors on the drive board? The issues is i can't desolder them without tearing of the pads. Stupid, i know but really they are so fragile there or whatever is he reason. Plus I'm not sure on some of them in terms of specs. So, what do you think? 1. Can it be capacitors? something else? 2. If it is probably capacitors, anyone has all the ratings? Thanks!
  13. Hello everyone, I am writing this today to see if anyone would potentially know what the issue is with my Xbox's dvd drive. A little backstory. I got an unopened 1.6 many months ago. The console would give the lovely 07 error, so I figured the hard drive was the problem. I swapped out the hard drive with a known good working hard drive, and chipped the console, and would still get the 07 error. In my quest to repair the xbox, I noticed that the green light was constantly flashing whenever I turned the console on. I swapped out the disc drive and all of the console's problems went away. That brings me to my issue. I currently have a Samsung SDG-605F that stops the console from detecting the hard drive whenever its IDE cable is connected. If I connect only the power cable, the console will open and close the console no problem. When I then connect the IDE cable, the console flashes green constantly and the drive will not respond to the eject button being pressed. I've taken a look at the drive's motherboard and there is nothing that stands out as wrong. My thoughts are that the firmware has gotten partially corrupted, the dram chip on the drive's motherboard is dead, or there are issues with the MediaTek controller on the drive's motherboard. I'm not sure what the issue is. I am hoping that someone here knows what the issue is and what I would need to do to fix it. Thank you for reading through all of this. DobaMuffin
  14. so I got a new Samsung SDG-605 drive and wanted to replaced the aging Philips on my 1.1 machine with it. except I'm having this weird problem with it. sometimes the Xbox hangs on the "xecuter rox my box" screen for a few seconds before booting. when that happens, the Samsung drive shows "init" rather than "empty" and won't read any discs. checking the system's settings tells me it's not recognizing the drive at all. I can get it to boot normally sometimes though, the drive works fine then. I've tried several things already, a different ide cable (even the stock one), power supply and cord, with and without the top case. formatting didn't help, either. I'm guessing it's either the ide to sata adapter (it's a startech) or maybe the cable needs to be in the correct orientation (blue on the board)? or did I get a dud drive?
  15. Finally time to let her go. (Plus I can't find the A/V cable, so your on your own there.) Boots to XBMC fully customized with emus, music, and games. 400 GB worth. - v1.6 xbox w/Red XCM Case (as mentioned, no AV cable. Case has some cracks, mostly on bottom.) - Xecuter 3 CE Chip - X3CP Crystal control panel w X3 XLCD (Not sure why, but the bottom of the lcd isn't working properly. It will with my hand close by, but text disappears when hand is removed.) - Used to have an X3IR, the board is still inside, but no IR. - 400 GB Seagate HD - Samsung disc drive Also have: Xecuter X2.6 CE Modchip (everything but the 5v wire for v1.6 consoles, so won't work on that console without some custom work) 007 Agent Under Fire Game Disc (exploitable to softmod) 4 controllers 80 GB WD HD 250 GB Seagate HD Another 400 GB Seagate HD Games Splinter Cell and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (only the best games ever...) 4x USB port to xbox controller port adapter AVI to HMDI adapter. (Helped me when booting flashbios on newer TVs.) Let me know if interested in anything. Highest price wins. Everything as is (I've mentioned all issues I know about.)
  16. Hi The other day I grabbed my console from my loft, it's a 1.1 with a Samsung Drive, fitted with an X2 chip from back in the day. Before switching it on I had it apart and removed the clock cap, I cleaned up the area and couldn't see damage apart from to one of the unused VIAs under the cap (it looks like it's designed to allow a different sized cap in this spot right?). I did a visual inspection of the other caps and couldn't see any bulges or obvious leaks. I don't know which version BIOS is on the X2, looking around the HDD it's likely 5031 or 5035, and it's got an EvoX dash on it, I found a Slayers 2.7 disc so I'm guessing I used this. Now the actual problem! The tray keeps ejecting whilst I'm sat on the dash. It ejects, I close it and the dash reports INIT in the disc status, i hear it trying to read and then it gives up and ejects again, then goes around in a loop. I had to goto work then, so switched it all off and left it. Returned from work later and try again. This time whilst it was doing the eject, init, eject ini loop I was searching for solutions and trying it with the X2 disabled and enabled. Finally the tray stays shut. I launch a game off of the HDD and it's fine. Booted my Slayers disc and it was fine. Search results were saying that Samsung have tray getting stuck issues normally. Check for things obstructing in the drive and give it a grease. Other results were saying that the clock cap could have caused some damage that relates to this (but that also depends on mobo version). I'm leaving it off again now, to see if it misbehaves after cooling down again (which is what happened earlier), and then I'll be pulling it apart again to have another look. I'm a bit gutted that I ordered a bunch of Cap Kits from Console5 last week for other machines but wasn't thinking about the old xbox at the time. Ordering just the xbox kit will cost more in shipping (to the UK) than the caps and be slow at the moment. I'll have to look for a UK supplier or stop being lazy and buy the individual caps! Can anyone advise on what is most likely out of the causes I mention, or even if there's more things to look at ta Pete
  17. samsung may be some of the best at reading disks but they are the worst at getting stuck trays. if changing the belt doesn't make the disk tray function correctly then what should i try next?
  18. Hi - I have a choice between a Philips or Samsung DVD drive for my newly softmodded xbox - both read disks - which one is the better option as I have quite a large collection of games on disk and intend on copying as many as I can to my hard drive but at 260GB with Coin ops 8 massive on there and other emulators - the disk drive will definitely get some use.
  19. I have successfully modded multiple LG 8163B drives before.and like the performance. I managed to get several of the Samsung 616T DVD drives and am now attempting to mod them for use in the Xbox. For reference, I am using instructions from this document: The definitive Samsung SD-616T modification tutorial - By: A@ron (Assembler Games). I used the 616T to read several discs before starting the project to be sure it was operating correctly. I then flashed the 605 firmware, switched the motor leads, soldered wires to the 8 points on the board and subsequently connected them to the proper Xbox yellow cable. Here are the results: the drive opens and closes correctly but will not read any DVD's - "Empty". I have checked the instructions and my work several times. It all looks right to me. What am I missing? Has anyone else ever completed this mod? Thanks
  20. Hey everyone I have a quick question. I have an original xbox version 1.1 with unleash X but not tsop flashed yet or a different hard drive. Which blank DVDS work with the Samsung drive that I can buy? I'm trying to burn HeXen on a disk and I was looking at one called the Verbatim CD-RW 700MB 2X-12X. Would that one work?
  21. I reconditioned the drive belt by putting it in boiling water for a few minutes but despite this trick my OGXbox's DVD drive will only open occasionally if I'm persistent enough in pushing the eject button. Then it seems to open/close normally for a while before going back to its troublesome state. Could it be something other than a worn drive belt? Is it time for a new drive? My box is soft-modded with UnleashX
  22. Video tutorial on how to pot tweak the Samsung SDG605 DVD drive found in the Original Xbox. It is recommended to have an ohm meter so you can see your adjustments before powering the drive back up.
