  1. I don't exactly know what I did. I just tested a PS2 joypad adapter which worked for a little while, then the console just turned off by itself, receiving no power as I tried to repeatedly turn it on to no avail. I opened it, dusted it off and tried to turn it on with both disc drives removed and un-connected (just to watch what was happening inside): the console turned on but for just a moment, the little fan started spinning but for just a second, I repeated that many times until a tiny little "something" nearby the 1st controller port started going on fire and blown. I dusted that off too (it literally melted, turned to dust in my fingers), tried to turn it on and it worked so I reconnected the drives and it works like before but I wonder: what was that and why that happened after I tried to use the PS2 joypad adapter? Now the console works, but I notice from beyond the plastic "grates" of the side there's a red led on the motherboard. Did I remove an obstacle to the correct functioning (a material bug or something) or did I accidentally removed a crucial part of the motherboard (like a chip, a transistor, etc... sorry for my ignorance I just noticed it when it was on fire for a second, something like extremely little smoking up then nothing)? I also checked the temp after a 2 minutes gameplay it went from 70 to 90 then it stayed stable... what should I do to prevent further damage?
  2. Hello, As any new member should do, I introduce myself. I am a 45 year old Frenchman who discovered the xbox when it was officially released in 2001. At that time I write hardware tutorials on its modifications for certain French sites which have sadly gone now. It was the good time of xbox scene and xbins. I left the Xbox world in 2010 following a difficult personal situation. It was in 2021 that I decided to get back into it. the French scene being almost dead the desire to revive it a little came to me by recreating a series of videos and tutorials in French. While searching on the net I went to this forum and reading this one I was very pleasantly surprised. I very quickly understood that I was on a forum of enthusiasts with very great technical skills. So I decided to join you. Thank you all for reviving the passion I had for modifying this superb console. P.s: Sorry if there are any mistakes, I use google trad. I understand English quite well but I find it difficult to write in this language.
  3. If even the slightest bit of pressure is placed on the case directly above the disc drive as it’s running, there’s a metallic “vibrating” noise. I actually had to loosen the screws on the case to stop it doing it all the time after reassembling it. I thought perhaps I’d tightened the two halves of the shell together too much. Also, is the read/boot time “normal” between inserting a disc and the black Xbox splash screen showing? Video here:
  4. So i have a 1.6 or 1.6b xbox and i ordered a mod chip to try modding it. i see every time someone mods an xbox that have this board that they use with it. I don't have that board and want to ask if its possible to mod it without it.
  5. This is my little collection, Mainly ogxbox with some 360 and pc games too.
  6. I'm new to modding and basically have near zero computer knowledge. I downloaded and unpacked Eartwormjames's 212 pack and I'm a little lost on where to put everything. I'm running the Rocky5 emustation and have a few roms sets running, but the 212 pack is giving me a headache. I'm using filezilla and have moved the roms from the roms folder to the n64 roms folder on my xbox, they are recognized but I get black screen when trying to launch a game. I'm assuming the surreal6.0 needs placed somewhere, or that maybe the 212 pack needs placed somewhere as a whole? Any help, as always, would be greatly appreciated. Going from no computer experience to the xbox mod has been a pretty steep learning curve.
  7. I have a Halo Edition 1.4 softmodded XBox that I'm trying to upgrade with a SATA drive. I bought a couple of the Kingwin adapters and I've tried about 6 different SATA drives with no luck. I've tried using both Hexen 2017 and Slayer to no avail. I've tried different 40 pin and 80 pi cables, pretty much changed out everything. Of the six drives I tested, I got one to format all the way through using Hexen but it will not boot the Xbox, just gives the standard error. I did lock the drive and backup the eeprom. I worked all day on this Sunday and frankly I'm about to throw in the towel. It's so painful trying to get new tech to work with old tech. I'm just looking for a little guidance, perhaps something simple I missed. Also, is the a tut for removing the battery / clock capacitor? BTW, as a last resort I do have a Startech adapter on order.
  8. So I recently put an xbox into a PC case, and now its fragging. I have some questions. Does every single mobo hole need to be secured for grounding reasons? I have 6 in and its very sturdy. the pads on the bottom of the PSU are also contacting the same metal as the mobo like in the xbox. Its possible one broke in the procedure but I was very gentle. Any info will help, thanks
  9. Hi everybody, first time here in SO long. I've had a modded Xbox since 2003 which I just turned back on after I heard out about the clock capacitor problem. Mine was ok (I was able to remove it and clean up alright) but having it back on I've found the hard drive to be quite loud and maybe not running so great. I wanted to replace the hard drive but I'm not sure if my old Chameleon modchip throws a wrench into the tutorials I've been looking at. If possible the method of hotswapping the DVD drive with the new HDD and cloning the original drive seems easiest. Any suggestions before I start fumbling through this are very much appreciated! And I have all the stats on my current setup if needed. Thanks so much for the help!!
