About Me

  1. Hello everyone, this is my first post in this forum and glad to join this group. I got one OG XBOX and had DVD issue, need someone to help me how to fixed. The problem is when I press XBOX console DVD eject button, the tray will open and eject DVD disc, but when I press again. (make DVD to read), the tray will open again and eject DVD disc, that means this console can not read disc, DVD drive is keep eject. I followed youtube clip to tear-down DVD drive and try to maintain & clean all parts, eventually, I found the root cause, when DVD drive tray insert, DVD tray is no lift to correct location, so drive is no detect. But I ready clean all parts, this issue can not be solve. How to repair or need to check other parts? thanks a lot
  2. Hi all, First of all, I'd like to thank Rocky5 and all involved in the softmodding tool, that really is a painless way to softmod. 18 years ago I was reading unofficial magazines on Xbox mods and was baffled by all that's possible and I'm glad I can start doing similar stuff thanks to you! I'm seeking help in the following problem, I posted this on Reddit but maybe you guys will have a better idea of what's going on here. I have seen several topics with the same problems over different boards but have yet to find a solution. I hope you guys don't mind. I've been stuck on this for the past few days. I'm trying to clone my hard drive (Seagate ST310211A, the 10GB one). I've tried using a WD3200AAJS, which was listed as working on x-pecs by multiple accounts, but haven't had luck as it returns Error 11 (missing/malfunctioning dvd drive). I know for a fact the drive is fine because when I plug everything back together with the stock drive, the console boots properly. Now, the WD is rated for 0.68A at 5v and 12v, so I looked up the current rating for the stock Seagate, which is here : Since the WD was quite a bit higher I took another hard drive I had lying around (Hitachi HTB-DS7AE100(B) ). Now I hadn't seen anything telling me this drive would be lockable or anything but I gave it a try nonetheless. Chimp recognized it fine and the clone went smoothly and it locked okay. The drive is rated for 0.42A for both 5 and 12v, so I thought it'd work better now. Still no luck as I get error 11 again. I do have a new 80 wire 40 pin cable, and am using the startech adaptor. The cable works fine with the stock drive, and the startech adaptor has good reputation, so I'm really at a loss here. Jumper switched back from slave to master (forgot it once and had error 7 this time). Can it be the hard drive drawing too much current and not leaving enough for the dvd drive? Dvd drive tray opens and closes even with error 11, everything's plugged in tight. I'm really at a loss here so any help is greatly appreciated, even if it's just 'buy this HDD, it works fine with the startech adaptor' !
  3. Decided to do a clean install on my 2tb drive. Inserted the hexen disc and it wont read. It just keep booting up into xbmc4gamers. So i decided to take the drive out and format it on the pc using fat xplorer. Now im getting error 13 or somtimes error 14. when connected back up. So i popped in the hexen disc and it wont read. Evo x shows in the corner and error comes up straight away Now the weird thing As soon as i plug my stock drive back in which the ide standard drive. Yes the ms dashboard loads and then starts reading the hexen disc. im using the 80pin cable open xenium chip sata adaptor has no jumpers Can any 1 explain what im doing wrong Before i moded the xbox i was using a jumpered ide to sata adaptor. my new 1 doesent have any jumpers. Could it be i need a startech adaptor
  4. I am upgrading the hard drive I installed sometime between 03-05 when I first modded my original xbox with an Xecuter 2. I don't recall which version of the chip I purchased I have all the parts I've seen suggested to begin. My issue is that I have not upgraded BIOS so its sitting at 4983.something. My board is 1.4 What is the recommended method and BIOS to get this upgraded or even upgrade my whole setup so I can utilize the full hard drive?
  5. I got a xbox og with no hard drive can I fix it?
  6. hello, i am trying to repair this drive, it has been opened before, i may have done something wrong previously but i do not know what is causing this. this drive is connected to a 1.3 xbox. i can provide a video of this issue here
  7. Getting error 12 and I feel like I've tried everything... cleaned the laser, the pcb, checked my wires and connections, everything seems good the drive even seems to work fine lol. I've got a mod chip on the way but it won't be here until March sometime probably this is super annoying.. although the laser resistance is reading 3.6k no matter how much I try to adjust it it seems stuck at the resistance. Everything else seems good even checked all the resistors on the pcb by the ide cable. Here's a video of the error code and the drive https://streamable.com/12oewm heres a pic of the only other thing that looks possibly damaged https://i.ibb.co/7yRzBqB/327869220-5958167487563144-7908614504502997769-n.jpg it's the right corner of the pcb attached to the laser but its hard to tell bcause I've never seen another one. If I can't fix this I'm going to have to wait at least a month for the Stellar mod to show up Somebody help me please!!
  8. Looking to buy a working disc drive ASAP. I'm from Canada, ON if that makes a difference.
  9. Lately the hard drive makes strange sounds, like "jumping" or scratching etc. So I formatted it(both low and hard level, with standard partition softwares) , checked it in Windows and done various tests like sectors and surfaces test: no problems were found. I reinstalled Slayer's Evox (latest), reuploaded all stuff, etc: same problems. At first boot, after many hours of inactivity, it goes well, but after a bit or just randomly the HD makes such weird sounds and the game crashes (especially Rallisport Challenge, a little more rarely with other games, both launched with TSR and IGR options set in various ways... though I noticed the problem is less frequent when TSR is on Normal and IGR is enabled). Maybe the HD is ok (also checked its compatibility before buying from the HD compatible chart I can't find now) but something else is wrong? I dusted the Xbox out, reconnected all cables: the problem is still there. Maybe it's not the sectors but the reader or any other part of the HD? Or maybe it's the way how files are uploaded to be wrong ( I use Filezilla, a router and normal ethernet cables, no crossover) ?
  10. Before you ask, yes I'm aware this is kind of a stupid question since you can just load Xbox games right from the hard drive. I also understand that any standard CD-ROM drive will also work in an Xbox. Don't read too much into "why would you want to do this". There isn't a really compelling reason. Now that that's out of the way... Has anyone had success with any sort of optical drive emulators in an original Xbox? There seems to be a few projects floating around out there made by people who wanted to replace optical IDE drives for certain obscure arcade cabinets and old PCs... There's an "IDE Simulator" by Tattiebogle that runs for a whopping $200. There's the NetPi, which uses a RaspberryPi as an ODD emulator, but isn't fully developed yet. There's plenty of IDE to SD (or CF) adapters, but that would just appear as a 2nd hard drive to the Xbox, which as we all know doesn't work (outside of Chimp). SCSI2SD - SCSI isn't IDE, but perhaps an adapter could be used? There's this project on Vagons.org where a guy is working on an ODD emulator, but it's still in development Memkor apparently makes (made?) a product like this, but I don't see it directly for sale anywhere. But I'm wondering if anyone has tried using something like one of these devices in an Xbox. The official DVT kits had optical drive emulation built-in from the factory- official Microsoft parts and everything (technically outsourced, but still). This route however has a pretty high bar for entry: the DVT kit itself + a Raptor PCI card + obscure drivers (which I assume only work for Windows XP) + the software and know-how to use it all. I recently bought a DVT4 kit and want to experiment with this feature purely because I find it fascinating. We'll see how that goes.
  11. Hi folks, I know what you're gonna say. And you're probably right... but... I've just dropped about £50 (inc delivery) on a ZALMAN ZM-VE200 SE... This is a hard drive caddy, USB powered, with eSATA data connection, that will spoof as an optical drive, and let you mount .iso files stored on an internal SATA drive. It was probably a waste of money, and my 2TB drive is perfectly happy... BUT I wanna give it a go! Hardmodded, running EvoX m8+ (with LBA48 and F&G). eSATA to sata (HDD gender not mobo gender) cable ordered. Gonna use a SATA to IDE adapter (with a SLAVE switch). Gonna try leaving the OGXbox DVD drive in place (with a Xbox disc in the drive, just disconnect the IDE), and connecting the IDE to the Zalman (via the eSATA to SATA, SATA to IDE SLAVE adapter - yuk!) I'm gonna power the SATA to IDE adapter via a molex splitter, and power the ZALMAN via an external USB brick. It probably won't work, but... it... might???????? What's your thoughts anyone? Wish me luck - I'll report back in a couple of months when all the cables and crap arrive from China into brexit-bound UK and when I get a couple of hours away from real life to mess around with it all...
  12. Hi, I have a 1.1 xbox with cerbios 2.0.3R, a seagate barracuda 2tb hdd, startech adapter and 80 wire cable from amazon. The problem is that the optical drive works only if cold booted with a disk in. After that I can swap disks without problems and everything is working. If I cold boot without a disk in, and I insert it after a dash has booted after checking the disk the dvd status become Busy (XBMC) or unknown (unleashX). Same for games or audiocd. The only quirk is that if I coldboot with an audiocd and swap for a game, the xbox still see the disk as an audiocd. I also tried m8+ and it's the same. Interesting is that if I set cerbios without the nodvd patch it can't find the dvd drive and frag but if I cold boot with a disk in, it finds the drive and boot as normal. Where could be the problem? Thanks
  13. Managed to replace 2 leaky caps but now I've put my x3 Xbox back together it seems the eject button isn't responding. Should the second little port on the face plate have something plugged into it?
  14. Ok, I'm going out of my mind here, and I hope I can get some help, and a direction. I will try to provide as much info as possible. Xbox Hardware: 1.6 Mod Chip: xecuter 3 ce Bios: (tried multiple with same outcome) Currently one made with EVTool HDD: Western Digital Blue 3TB SATA w/ Startech SATA converter & 80 wire 40 pin IDE cable So here is the problem. I have re-formatted the drive and partitioned it multiple times using different tools off of the "OGXBox Installer 2021 - v1.5.4" Disk. I have use multiple Bios and with success have see the F drive in OGXBox Installer, and XBMC4G as a 2TB usable space. After I transfer my games to the drive, I can only see 256 out of over 800 games. The other games come up as gibberish and can't access them (please see attached photos). Even when I look in the file explorer in XBMC4G I can only see 256 games. If I FTP to the drive, I see all the games. I'm completely out of ideas why I would get this problem multiple times. Please help Thanks in advance!
  15. I have been trying many combintations based on info found here, but still cannot get the dash to see G: Drive. I have a 1.6 with an original X2.6 Install, and a 2tb drive with the Origin Image (Only becuase I wanted to get things setup and back into OG Xbox) I have been using bios' downloaded from the right sources, and uploading them via ethernet with flashbios always on bank 1&2. I have tried the following either modified with EVTool (for 256k) or X2ool for the Xecuter bios (5035 512k) I try to mod the bios for LBA support, but its not happening. I think there maybe an issue with the programs above and compatability/admin rights?? So far I have tried: x2_5035_v16plus_512k modified with X2ool M8plus_16 modified with EVTool (1.0.8) M8_16_LBA48_IGR_C-06 modified with EVTool (1.0.8) The last one I really expected to work......I've not played with any partition tools as I was concerned that I might loose data. Finally, I've not tried any of the installation DVD's as the drives dont seem to be working.....
  16. I have a sata hard drive that is compatible with the xbox, along with the little converter board needed. I also have a new 40 pin / 80 wire ribbon cable for the sata HDD. When I do the initial hot swap of the ribbon cable from the DVD drive, do I use the original one in the Xbox or the new one? I ask because I tried the new one and it seemed to boot up fine while both hdd's are powered on with a y splitter Molex. Now when i ran chimp, it seemed to start ok but then it just froze up and didn't go any further. It started and got to those first initial error text (which is normal on doing this I believe). However it just sat there and didn't prompt me to press a button to proceed any further. So I wasn't sure if there was any steps I missed. I was following this tutorial
  17. So I thought I'd try out life without a DVD drive but I've run into some issues after removing it, attaching just the mainboard to power/IDE, and flashing a noDVD M8+ BIOS patched for XboxHD+ and 128MB RAM. My symptoms: - When I try to start up CoinOPS Ninja, it just hangs on a black screen - When I press the controller buttons to reset the console, it enters a boot loop, eject flashes green and shows Xbox logo then black screen over and over again. Is the soft reset shortcut somehow tied to eject and the DVD drive? Xbox games themselves and other emulators seem to be launching fine btw.
  18. Hi Guys; I have picked up a faulty XBOX over the weekend which has an error 5 code. I removed the drive and connected to my PC with FatXplorer and I am able to view the contents of the drive. Which means obviously it is unlocked. Is there any way I can lock the hard drive and re-install it in the XBOX? What options do I have?
  19. This is not my problem but its not something I've come across before so I'm hoping somebody here has an explanation/solution because I'm stumped. Its from a Reddit user so I hope it is OK to post the link:- https://old.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/x2rn3u/help_dashboard_is_missing_how_do_i_fix_it/ The title says it all - the guy has FTP access now and, I think, that's due to a SID/AID disc and FTP access. He posted a link to a screenshot of his Xbox drive content and it it looks to me as if there is no E:\drive. Using SID rescue options I have zero experience so if somebody here has that knowledge and/or a solution it would be useful general Xbox information worth posting here for the future reference of all OGXbox users.
  20. Ok so I recently soft modded my Xbox with the latest Rocky5 build and installed chimp via the extras disc. I then hooked up my 1tb lockable sata hard drive with a star tech ide adapter and also a 80 pin cable. This was set to slave with the og hardrive set to master. Everything seemed to be ok whilst rubbing chimp. The process took around an hour and half with speeds of around 3MiB’s per second to transfer the 5gb of content stored on the Xbox. I then fully installed my 1tb whilst set to master but I got error 7/6 on boot. I tried to re do the process but now when I launch chimp it states that my slave drive is locked and I can’t unlock it even though I’ve tried all of the unlock options. I’ve also tried 2 other compatible drives but as soon as I launch chimp it states that they are locked even though they wasn’t before. Even when I try them back in my pc they are now password locked at the bios screen and can not be unlocked. For these drives I haven’t even ran any processes within chimp for it to lock them in the first place. Anyone have any ideas?
  21. Hey, I have installed the chip successfully and flashed the M8plus16 bios to the 256k slot but my DVD drive is toast and wont read my setup dvd (I tried tweaking the pot in stages all the way down to 500 ohms but nothing). I have installed and formatted a new harddrive within Xblast but is there a way to install a dashboard without a dvd drive? Is there a Bios with a built in FTP server for example? Thanks!
  22. I wouldn't consider this necessarily a mod as much as a repair but I wanted to talk about how when I was 14 and had absolutely no clue how anything on an xbox worked, I replaced the laser on my disc drive in an xbox that was completely stock (at the time). Now I don't know if I actually fixed the problem but it sure seems like it. At one point I stopped being able to load games from the drive, no games worked except for some reason the JSRF/SEGA GT 2002 game worked every time that originally came with the system. So at the time, all I could think was that the laser was bad and that the only option was to replace it. So I went to Ebay and searched for an original xbox laser and sure enough found one for I believe around $15USD. I swapped it into my drive and its been loading games perfectly fine since. Only I don't know if that affected its ability to read other disc types. In any case, I've read everywhere, for the most part, that people who have dead drives have no choice but to go buy another xbox that still has one working. So the conclusion I am coming to is, why have I not seen anyone mention buying a replacement laser? Did I just happen to find one or did it not occur to anyone that you could potentially just replace the laser? Was just one of my thoughts I've had for several years and just wanted to share and see what other people thought or know about replacing just the laser.
  23. I cant see anything in the file explorer and FTP doesn't work either. I tried to load a Bios from a usb but it file explorer is still empty.
  24. Hi guys TLDR: - My xbox's Samsung disc drive no longer works, already tried the usual things. - Am I using the correct replacement laser? - have I overlooked anything for optical drive repair? - Can I still mod my xbox with an OpenXenium chip + can I properly upgrade the hard drive without ever needing the disc drive again (eg for running Hexen or OGXbox installation Disc, or can I use another way to properly set up a 2tb hard drive I've got for the planned upgrade). ________________________ Full version. Hi guys. I've got a stock OG PAL Xbox (v1.1?) that doesn't read any kind of discs anymore. I found this out 3 weeks ago when I took my xbox out for the first time after a few months. It doesn't ever give disc errors. It does not have any hard or soft mods applied yet, but I've got an openxenium chip on hand ready for when I eventually get to modding (also have a 2tb Seagate Barracuda drive set aside as an upgrade). I'll add that I've already removed the clock capacitor almost 2 years ago when I bought the xbox and had zero associated issues. I usually run my xbox via RGB scart on my CRT, and it previously ran without any problems. My OG xbox has a Samsung drive: SDG-605 version B, and originally has a SOH-D16 laser. I initially tried the usual stuff and none of it worked : - cleaned the laser lens - tried lowering the DVD Potentiometer resistance through various ranges (1800ohms from factory, lowered down to 830ohms testing every 100 or so Ohms) - checked the lubricants and deep cleaned the console for any dust/debris. - Eject button and disc tray works fine. I can't find any spare optical drive replacements in the UK currently, so I opted to replace the laser assembly. I purchased the replacement from AliExpress, though the laser model number I received was actually SOH-DR16S, rather than the SOH-D16. The listing stated it was for SOH-D16, but I received the SOH-DR16S instead (I can't seem to find any of the former anywhere). I couldn't find any confirming information about whether these laser assemblies are completely cross compatible in my DVD drive (but all the connector assemblies and ribbon connectors seem to fit perfectly fine). I also followed Bahamutfan64's reddit post and the linked guide to try and prepare the laser for best compatibility*: - swapped the white houseing onto the new laser - desoldered the static protection/storage solder bridges for both potentiometers (and tried my best to minimise static discharge risk when working with the lasers after the safety bridges were removed) - reassembled the laser assembly into the Samsung drive and removed the blue lens protection film - cleaned the lens with 99% IPA to remove any residue from the protective film. - recorded both potentiometers' factory resistances. The CD pot was 800ohms from factory, whilst the DVD pot's factory was 2010ohms. These values failed to boot any of my games or CDs. - I then gradually tweaked and tested my DVD pot down to about 1240ohms, testing at roughly every 100ohm intervals, and still couldn't boot into any of my games. I'm not sure if I should go all the way down to 800ohms onnthe DVD pot on a "brand new" laser. Here's how the Xbox mostly seemed to usually behave with the new laser (and even with the old laser with Pot tweaks): with the game disc inside, the eject button would keep flashing. At the same time the optical drive motor would try a few short bursts of spinning the disc, followed by a longer spin. After this longer spin it gives up reading the disc and the eject button stops flashing. I don't know if this is a sign of the optical drive's spindle motor failing, but I think it may be unlikely. I don't get any error messages, and the xbox simply remains in the green home menu screen (even last year when I had occasional failed disc reads, I would never receive error messages). I tried a range of different known working games and CDs to no success. I want some help and was wondering where to go from here. I have a few questions: Is there any way of telling whether the optical drive's PCB is gone? There aren't any obvious signs such as leaky caps or burnt componenents. I don't own an oscilloscope or any really seriously fancy equipment. The ribbon cables are all intact and I've even tried cleaning all of their contacts and reseating. All the necessary moving parts/gears appear/feel lubricated (doesn't appear overlubed) and the laser's worm gear/motor seems to be working fine. The eject/disc tray motor and associated parts also seem to be working. Is my replacement laser assembly actually compatible? I actually tried ordering 2 laser assemblies, sadly I received SOH-DR16S and not SOH-D16. Would these differences in lasers even matter for my Samsung Drive? They both appear identical. As far as I know, I believe an SOH-D16 can be used in place of a SOH-DR16S, but not sure if it works the other way around for my specific context. Would it be worth me trying the second brand new SOH-DR16S laser as well? I have no way if telling if these new lasers were dead on arrival. If I fail with disc drive repair, could I still successfully install the openxenium chip without ever needing the disc drive? Is it possible to run the OG xbox without an optical drive ever again and still get the key modchip benefits? Ie changing the bios/nand file, upgrading to a 2tb hard drive from stock (and boot my backups from this drive). I know that the Hexen disc/OGXBox installation disc would still require an optical drive, but could I still run these (or at least their features) without an optical disc drive? Is Hexen/OGXbox install disc even necessary in my setup is using OpenXenium? Ideally I'd like to avoid grabbing a second xbox just to salvage a working DVD drive that will likely fail soon anyway. I'm also aware with a modchip I can grab a PC dvd drive to play CD/DVD/burned media if absolutely needed (sadly I don't have one of these to hand, and I won't ever be able to use this to boot my original discs). Sorry for the long post, I wanted to include as much detail as possible including everything I've already tried and considered. *Guides I followed for laser replacement: https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/phuhy3/samsung_sohdr16_laser_replacement/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share http://fillwithcoolblogname.blogspot.com/2011/02/xbox-dvd-laser-replacement.html?m=1
  25. I softmodded my original Xbox with Rocky5 through Splinter Cell. I used chimp to clone the stock drive to a 320GB IDE drive, and everything was working great with UnleashX. I again used chimp to clone that drive to a 1TB drive using a SATA adapter which also worked through hours of gaming. I recently tried to play Halo CE using the disc, and about 10 minutes in, the game froze up. The Xbox booted up after restarting, but was really slow. I tried to clear the cache, and that froze. When I re-booted, I got an error 11. I replaced the disc drive, and got an error 16. I couldn't find the old OEM drive, but I did find my old 320GB drive which loaded up no problem. I used Chimp to repair the Error 16 on my 1TB drive, and after that, I got an Error 13. If I put in Halo 2, or Hexen 2018, it goes to an error 14. I went back to my old 320GB, loaded up Hexen 2018, and used the "Krayzie One-Click Softmod Installation". After that, I cloned to the 1TB drive, in hopes to get past the error 13, and still get error 13 on the 1TB. Back at the now "Krayzie" 320GB drive, when I try to launch the MS Dashboard through UnleashX, I get "Unable to launch "c:xboxdash.xbe". File does not exists." I copied the MSDASH files to the c drive, now I'm able to launch the MS Dashboard, and used Halo 2 to upgrade my dash. I've tried cloning to 3 different drives, tried different cables, and each time I get Error 13 on the drives I try to copy. On each of those cloned drive, putting in a disc goes to Error 14. Any help to figure out how to get this 320GB drive to clone to my old 1TB drive would be greatly appreciated.
