About Me

  1. Bought a Xbox at the local boot sale recently, after opening it up the caps look like they need replacing. Pretty sure I have read on here that the 1.2 usually has 3 caps not the 5 as on most so I just wanted to check if this is right or if I have got that wrong. It has the conexant chip and a thomson dvd drive if that is of any help. The guy had a couple for sale but this one has the 3 little buttons on the front left so I bought it hoping it still had the chip fitted. It does indeed have a X2.3B Lite and the hdd is a 120gb so I assume it was done back in the day, I have only just had time to open it up so I need to do some searching to see what that chip is all about. My main issue for now is ordering the right caps so if anyone could confirm the version from my explanation I would appreciate it. Can post a pic of board if needed. Thanks Cush
  2. I am just getting to know the Xbox. Obviously the clock caps leak on the Xbox and I am assuming from my experience that the large 3300uF and 1500uF caps don't age well but what are the smaller ones like? Can you leave them in or is it best to swap the lot? What do people with more experience think...
  3. I have a TSOP v1.0 that I decided to make a first attempt at a RAM upgrade using a hot air rework station. After adding the fourth chip I began having FRAG errors. After several re-flows and checking all the pins, I figured I got bad RAM chips. So I removed them all. AND STILL FRAG… after a closer inspection, I noticed that one of the nearby SMD capacitors went missing. C5B3. Any chance someone know the value of this cap, or has a list? I’m not sure if you can measure an onboard cap.
  4. I have noticed that there are still a few sealed consoles on ebay and they can get quite expensive. With all these consoles being sealed and in storage for over 15 years is it likely that the caps (apart from the usual problem caps) will need to be reformed or replaced before powered?
  5. What list is the most accurate for 1.6? And if anybody has a mouser or digikey part list to share I would love that.
  6. i've been using newark.com but they are really annoying when it comes to finding out info about my shipment. what company do y'all use?
  7. i have a shipment of capacitors arriving friday. i'm wanting to try an experiment where i fill all the cap spots(instead of just the 3 spots) in front of the processors with 3300uf caps to see if the extra power being available to the gpu/cpu help the xbox's performance. my question is, is there any chance that this will damage the xbox? also, has anyone ever tried this before?
  8. Hi guys. Today i got the new capacitors for both of my v1.4 xboxes and measured them (because i'm nosy). The most of them are pretty close to the µF which are stated. The 1500 µF 6,3v (~1700 µF) what is fine, the 3300 µF 10v naild it but the 3300 µF 6,3v are going strait through the roof with ~4100 µF and i wonder if thats not a bit to much?
  9. i'm thinking about ordering more capacitors for capping some xbox's. can anyone tell me the difference between aluminum caps and leaded aluminum caps?
  10. i'm not well versed on how to interpret the readings on capacitors but my understanding is that the uf should go down as the cap is wearing out. i pulled a couple of 3300uf caps off of a board and they are both reading over 8000uf in my esr meter. i tried some new caps to be certain that the meter is reading correctly and it is. why would the uf go up on an old cap?
  11. can i replace 3300uF 6.3v capacitors with 3300uF 10v ones ? got a 1.6 Halo box that is almost in prestine condition apart from being opened by me and all 5 capacitors next to the mobo power connector are popped. the only replacements I have at hand would be the aforementioned 10v ones that I scavenged from a v1.2 board.
