sentimental things like photos and video tapes of me as a kid just to name a few things.

That part really sucks. I've recently been cataloging and digitally archiving all my old family photos (going back to the 60's). There's thousands. And digitizing VHS tapes. I couldn't imagine losing all that stuff. Sorry for your loss of this stuff.

I'm sure there's other folks, but the 1st name that pops into my head for getting a new HDMI-kitted Xbox would be @ModzvilleUSA (https://twitter.com/modzvilleusa)

Just FYI, there's about to be two new options for internal/digital HDMI mods. OXHD (by Ryzee and Harcroft) and an HDMI project being worked on by Nemesis. Both are close to being done. Point being- if you wait a bit you'll have more options beyond MakeMHZ to choose from.

  2. Why lock the drive at all? Hardmodded Xboxes don't need the drive to be locked. Skip the lock entirely if possible.

Error 09 is "Hard drive parameters are missing or incorrect". It's not a common problem. If the Xbox couldn't detect the drive at all, it would show a different error code (E08). If it wasn't locked correctly, it would give error 06. I don't think it's related to locking. XeniumOS failing to format the drive is also suspicious.

Is your HDD a SATA drive? Are you using an adapter? If so, what kind? And are you using the stock IDE cable or an 80-wire cable?

Do you have the ability to hook the drive up to a PC? Are you confident the drive isn't dead to begin with?

Also, XeniumOS is outdated at this point. Once you get your HDD working, consider upgrading the firmware to PrometheOS.

  3. I love mine. 😁

Got it pre-modded, courtesy of @Harcroft.

@EvanBlax has modded his with industrial lenses, which helps with field of view and clarity too.

I would recommend industrial M12 lenses as they'll be much much better, and a hell of a lot more correct for the format. I kitted out my Eyetoys with a M12 6mm and 4mm f/1.0 machine vision lenses and it's incredible [source - EvanBlax via Discord]

Here's a link to a seller who offers compatible lenses: eBay - Industrial Lenses by seller LELEN 02

There's also some STL files floating around of the Eyetoy's plastic enclosure. I'd love to modify that and put a big Xbox "X" shape in the case. Maybe even accommodating industrial lenses? That would be kickass.

When I get around to opening my Eyetoy, I also plan on replacing the red and blue LEDs with white ones. The stock LEDs are surprisingly bright! If you get close, you can see red/blue lighting shining on your face. Swapping in white LEDs would turn those into a makeshift ring light. It wouldn't be dramatic, but would be more useful than red/blue I think.

Speaking of the camera, the Xbox Video Chat app has also been translated to English by Evan. He's done a great job with that. I've been poking around with making a skin for the app. Still tinkering with that...

For anyone wanting to explore the video chat app themselves, here's some notes I just want to put somewhere publicly:

    • UIX files can be opened with https://github.com/Ernegien/UIXTool. The tool can't import modified assets, so hex editing assets back in would be the route.
    • XSB and XWB files are related to audio. Sound effects, etc.
    • Background music adds in about 500mb to size of app. Music can be entirely removed, or replaced with custom songs. Standard Xbox WMA format applies. I'm planning on dumping all but a small handful to keep app size compact.
    • App can't be patched to run in HD... at least not easily.

  4. My experience with the dual fan + dvd elimination kit mod-

Overall feedback is that I very much enjoy having this mod in my main build. I haven't played an actual game disc in years at this point, so the DVD drive was just taking up space. The Xbox I installed the fan kit into has an upgraded motherboard, with 1.4ghz CPU/128MB RAM, and I wanted to run a more quiet exhaust fan without sacrificing cooling. I installed a 60mm Noctua fan as the main fan and paired that with two stay quiet! 80mm fans.

    20240111_224008.thumb.jpg.e406bf22bd7f92327e2589259f558df4.jpg

The system is extremely quiet, even at 100%, and I'm not seeing CPU temps go uncomfortably high, as was somewhat the case before. I haven't done temp testing yet (though I intend to), so I can't speak too much about the cooling difference with the mod yet, but so far so good!

    20240109_042057.thumb.jpg.594cfe787b7dec219264af8f5d07385f.jpg

I also got a fan splitter and cut it down to a small size, then stuck it on the caddy. I didn't want to solder things together so that I could plug in the stock fan while working on my Xbox and be able to remove the fan caddy completely.

    20240115_002522.thumb.jpg.0bb05eaee3c8e87733d0630a8275600e.jpg

I wasn't sure if the stock fan header would be able to drive 3 fans instead of one, but I haven't noticed any issues, even with all at 100%. I wanted to wire the 80mm fans off the regular CPU fan header to be able to control it in software. Quiet in XBMC and loud in games.

Both parts are very well made and drop in place effortlessly.

I spliced together a molex connector onto a DVD power cable. Works quite well and looks tidy.

    Praise:

    • Very well made parts.
      • Nemesis dialed the design in so that it all fits together effortlessly. The sturdiness of his prints are top notch. And they even manage to look good. His design lets you swap in different colored faces to the top of the fan shroud, which is a nice touch.
    • Fitment is great.
      • No alignment issues. Parts just drop in as if they were stock.
    • Does what I expected.
      • Blasting air directly down onto the CPU and PSU helps keep parts cool. I'll have to get a thermocouple and dig into it more, but seems to work, even if the 80mm fans might be recirculating some warm air.
    • Well thought out / well laid out.
      • The fan caddy has channels for running wires, and with my fans routing their wires was easy.
      • Nem included a bracket for mounting SATA-IDE adapters with my kit, and it holds the adapter in place.

It's not a cheap mod, but you get what you pay for. It's a niche product for enthusiasts, and it is well suited at its price point. I'm very happy with it and would get another in the future.

    Suggestions:

    • Offer alternative way of mounting DVD bezel. Screw posts can break if you're not careful.
      • Removing your DVD drive includes moving the DVD bezel from the drive to Nem's included mounting bracket. The bracket then screws into the Xbox's front screw standoffs. This has the side effect of allowing for situations where if you have the top case taken off and accidentally bump the DVD bezel, it puts pressure on the screw standoffs at an angle, instead of the usual lateral or downward pressure. This can lead to the screw posts breaking.
    • Offering a DVD power cable would be helpful!
      • After moving the HDD, the molex wire is no longer near the HDD. Running the power to the drive's new location requires an extension cable or similar otherwise. I made a cable by splicing a DVD connector to a molex connector, but it would be convenient if something like that could be offered/included.
    • More room for running fan wires.
      • This is more feedback for the 60mm fan bracket, but with dual-80mm fans mod too, there's probably going to be wires running between the fan caddy and the 60mm fan bracket. It's a bit tight and maybe would benefit from leaving an open channel in the 3D print for wires to rest in.
    • Some means of powering the fans. Maybe also controlled via temp curves. I know Nem is working on a different method to power the fans (PWM, etc) so this may be a moot point later.

For profiles targeting 1.4GHZ systems, does that mean they are more resource intensive but the upgrades can handle it?

Correct. Higher bitrates mostly, which leads to less macro-blocking artifacts in HD videos. It's mostly the CPU upgrade that helps with this. My 1.4ghz / 128mb Xbox still has about 70MB of RAM free when using this profile, so it's not hitting a memory limit.

  6. Version 0.2b:

    • Added initial support for starting playback partway through a video. When playing a video that was already in progress, XBMC now starts playback at the correct time. This doesn't seem to affect all videos, further testing is needed to determine why and target those codecs/containers/etc.
      • XBMC now displays the correct length of the currently playing video.
      • XBMC can now fast-forward/rewind in currently playing videos.
    • Transcoded videos are delivered over TS streams (instead of MKV).
    • Changed profile identification. New builds of XBMC in the future (beyond 3.5.3) should now work with this profile.
    • Beginning to add support for Photos. Doesn't work yet.

    To-do:

    • Fix thumbnails for media in XBMC. Not sure if thumbnails being sent by server are too large or what. Profile has a spot for "MaxAlbumArtWidth" and I tried setting this to 192 (the size XBMC uses for its own thumbnails), but I'm pretty sure this only affects music. I don't see an overall thumbnail size setting.
    • Figure out why DLNA folder browsing doesn't work. Jellyfin handles "special" libraries in a certain way that XBMC doesn't like, including Movies, Shows, Music. Browsing Photos directories (and other basic library types) works.
      • Settings RequiresPlainFolders and RequiresPlainVideoItems to true doesn't seem to help.
    • A lot of testing is still needed. There is a huge variety of content that JF supports. Need to dial in exactly what XBMC supports and ensure transcoding or direct-play happens properly. Need to test: HDR, high framerate videos, high bit depth videos, Atmos, and many others.
    • Create versions of profile targetting 1.4ghz / 128mb upgraded motherboards.

    Testers needed!

  7. There used to be separate versions for debug/retail. Then with version 2.03 they combined both into one BIOS and added more settings in the config file to support this. The NFO file for 2.03 refers to this new combined version as "hybrid".

In v.2.1.0 they added support for v1.6 Xboxes.

I am in the process of zipping up the CCI's now. Once that's done I will begin the LONG task of uploading to a seedbox and getting a torrent out there.

What's the size savings by zipping them?

there were enough parts to put it on the stellar... and the legacy modules

The parts on Stellar are different. It has an FPGA and an ARM processor, not an STM32 (I'm not sure which of these handles communication with the HD+ board). And the Legacy addon is a recent addition, so maybe parts have stabilized since then?

If the old HD+ were changed back to having the STM32 onboard again, while Stellar is fully capable of doing that workload on its own, it would be sort of redundant.

If that is the case then it will no doubt be another way of locking people into his product.

For the record, Dustin claims the XboxHD+ change (making it reliant on Stellar) was due to parts shortage a while back. I asked about it in their Discord the other day and he replied:

"This is one of the many backorders I made for the part. Ordered in April of 2021 and it didn't ship until April 2022."

    image.png

    source (via Discord)

So when he couldn't source the STM microcontrollers for HD+, he dropped the requirement for that part and made Stellar handle the workload. I guess instead of supporting two SKUs of HD+ once parts stabilized, he made a separate add-on board that adds back in the STM chip for non-Stellar users.

Apparently, project Tepache, was in the works prior to XboxHD+ Legacy being announced. Folks noticed that MM's flashing guide (available on the MM website) could be applied to any off-the-shelf STM32 board, which of course sparked controversy because MM didn't want his firmware he developed for his Legacy product to be used elsewhere, as mentioned in the license for the firmware. This lead to MM sending a DMCA takedown notice to ConsoleMods and their hosting provider, Cloudflare.

Speaking of licenses, according to Milenko, the XboxHD+ firmware was originally licensed under GPLv2, but that was later changed (and apparently history of the change was scrubbed?). More info here.

Also, just want to add that being "locked in" to only using Stellar OS is a bit disappointing, but I also get why they don't put time into supporting other BIOSes. If your goal is just to load Cerbios, Stellar is overkill. Doing so would negate the work done that lets Stellar operate the way it does; injecting kernel patches on the fly instead of just loading a baked BIOS image, also negating the need for the ARM processor that's on board. Hopefully we see more features in the future that take advantage of its hardware capabilities, like the SD card slot and the HS expansion port.

Btw Cerbios is compatible with Stellar when using its BFM mode. So you're not totally locked in, thanks to the work done by the Cerbios team.

On a separate note, they released firmware v1.4.0 today. This adds support for unlocking locked hard drives without needing their original keys, which is nice.

For folks who want to recover locked drives without using Stellar, Harcroft has been spearheading (along with Skye and Siktah) a method to recover drives using drive commands that should be out soon.
