You need to have a look in side and you will find that the cap's near the 20 pin power connector have got expanding tops and need to be replaced.

Soft modding is like masturbating, It gets the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.Well, you're right! Need to replace them.
I believed that 1.6's would always be a safe bet regarding clock caps

i recently got a new crystal, 1.6 PAL console. after first turning it on and leaving it on for some time, it just made one loud "pop" noise. wanted to be sure and turned it off and unplugged it immediately.
today it made the loud "pop" noise again, but only after having it turned off and after unplugging the console. Which was even weirder to me.

I use XDVDMulleter to extract ISOs and then transfer them over to the XBox via crosslink cable

I want to try this method:
I hope that it won't be that much worse compared to an Original Microsoft AV Plug. It's just way easier like this for a newbie who's got no experience soldering

How are extracted Xbox ISO so much smaller in file size? Most games take up 4-7 GB in ISO, but when extracted, they're half or even less the size they were before in ISO

I’ve seen someone letting isopropyl alcohol sit on the stickers and soak in for a bit to cleanly remove them for putting back on. Haven’t tried that method myself. I’ve only used a hairdryer to partly lift the stickers to get at screws.
Isopropyl alcohol is the key. See 00:57 in the video

Would I buy one probably not unless it was super cheap.

Soft modding is like masturbating, It get's the job done but it's nothing like the real thing.Thinking about it more thoroughly, I came to the conclusion, that it might be still somewhat early for them to release it, as the console was part of the generation of the Sony PS2 and Nintendo Gamecube.
Microsoft have also been more active in making backwards compatibility a thing within their newer consoles. Therefore they might have been seeing a release of such a mini retro console as something that would cannibalize their existing efforts.
The main goal could be that they just want people to buy their newest current-gen products. -
What features would you want to see?
Or would you rather not see any of the sorts at all, after looking at the underwhelming retro product delivered by Sony, the Playstation Classic?
I think it would be sweet to see a miniature version, that would enable you to download games of your choosing, outputting higher resolutions etc
All in all it would be nice to expose a bigger audience to the classic Xbox and its unique features and feel.
But there also lies the problem... How in the world could any manufacturer do it justice, without just throwing out a cash grab? -
Great job! You're in for an awesome ride and lots of fun
Are you aware that only 2TB can be used/recognised by the Xbox though?

Thanks, this really came in handy after an HDD upgrade I just did.
But what about ISOs? Is that "C-Xbox Tool" still a thing?
XDVDMulleter seems to be the best option, for anyone looking to easily extract Xbox ISOs

You used 38% Ethanol, what was the other 62%? 38% sounds like whiskey. The best to use is isopropyl alcohol, since it leaves no residue. I heard that traces of sugar can deteriorate a pcb.
No, it was a proper cleaning solution which consists of 38% ethanol, probably laced with distilled water or something similar and other ingredients which make it not suitable for human consumption. Interestingly enough the other 62% are not accounted for on the label of the plastic bottle.
Yes, isopropyl alcohol is the way to go, definitely - I was lazy though, and lucky thus far, it seems

Easy way to sort this issue is to use Rocky 5's soft modding tool. This will repair or replace any soft mod version.
watch this video for how to do it. links for downloads are in his video info.
Everything worked like a charm! Also backed up both EEPROMS, before and after NK'ing.
Now it's on to the next level: Upgrading the HDD, getting an IDE/SATA adapter and a new 80 pin IDE-Cable.
I was impressed to see that my Xbox hit only 56°C at peak, probably because it wasn't a heavy load of work. Will need to re-apply some new thermal compound as well, as it's never been swapped in the past 15 years, I only thoroughly cleaned the motherboard and the entire case using 38% Ethanol and a toothbrush/brush
Thanks for your replies and especially thanks to Rocky5 for providing such excellent software!!!
Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm also building my own Component Cables from an Xbox 360 HD AV pack next up

My Xbox always gets stuck when the Microsoft logo pops up below the big Xbox logo in the center of the screen. How could I boot into the dashboard?
I softmodded it in 2012 and could've easily messed up somewhere.
Games and unofficial DVDs work just fine, luckily.
Thanks in advance

Thanks so much and congrats on over 1k posts!
The Xbox does still power on, but it always forced the date/time setting after boot-up. So it works just barely I'd assume. Better safe than sorry though, that capacitor will get replaced.
Would be refreshing to see a permanent fix for this issue, rather than always facing this problem on a regular basis...
