  1. I tried swapping in an old original hard drive that has XBMC4Gamers installed, no problem loading both XBMC4Gamers and DVD2Xbox. I tired swapping 80- pin cables as well as cheapie 2 cap SATA adapter for Startech SATA adapter, tried reinstalling XBMC4Gamers on both, neither will run XBMC4Gamers or DVD2Xbox.
  2. OK this is strange too. If I try to run DVD2Xbox (XBMC4Gamers\Apps) from the file manager it also won't load. I tried installing DVD2Xbox from the softmod tools as a standalone app, it also won't load. No logs in either. Yet my games all load and so does XBMC-Emustation. I tried switching the drive from my 1.6 xbox to a 1.0 xbox, same thing. Have no idea what to try next.
  3. Thank you for the link to the advanced settings doc. I tried setting that loglevel, unfortunately it's not logging anything - on this new install, there is no log at all (it hasn't created one). On the old install (which I deleted, hoping installing fresh would fix the issue) it wasn't writing to the log since it stopped loading. The last entry in the old log was that it was loading the last game I played (i.e. the last time it was working) - i.e. the timestamp was before uploading the latest batch of games and XBMC4Gamers stopped loading - so I didn't think there was anything useful to be gleaned.
  4. Just a quick hello, I got a 1.6 XBOX back in 2005 and used to play with friends on weekends. Mostly Halo / Halo2, Kung Fu Chaos, and BattleFront 2. Around 2009 I had a friend who knew how to do the softmod and had 007 and a savegame to softmod my console. Ran XBMC and a bunch of emulators on the stock HD. Didn't use it very much during the 2010s. Around 2020 I got back into the Retro gaming scene when I bought a PS Classic for $20 and then modded it with AutoBleem. It reminded me that I still needed the OG XBOX to play my XBOX games. I tried firing the XBOX back up and it would no longer turn on. I took it apart and noticed the 5 CPU caps were blown. I ordered some replacements and then put off attempting the recap for a few years. I finally recapped my XBOX and it was a success, my first real solder job. I also redid the heatsink compound on both the CPU and GPU. After getting it working, I discovered my DVD drive no longer reads discs (CDs or DVDs) - can't figure out if its the laser or the spindle motor - it doesn't seem like it gets up to speed. Through watching YouTube videos I discovered I could FTP the rocky softmod extras disc and modernize my Softmod and then null (all 1s) the EEPROM key. I then bought a 2TB Barracuda and a Startech adapter. I couldn't get Chimp cloning to work so I used xboxhdm23usb-Beta2 to create a new HD image and lock it. I'm trying to get this system image set up and work out all the kinks with patching for 480p on 1.6, etc. While I was doing this I saw someone was selling an XBOX that worked but didn't read discs for $20, so I jumped on it. It turned out to be a 1.0 For this one, I needed to hotswap the harddrive and use FATXplorer to install the Rocky5 as the dashboard. That's what led me to this site, I was having all kinds of trouble trying to get my USB IDE adapter to work with FATXplorer. Long story short, I bought a more compatible adapter and was able to perform the hotswap. I bought a used 1.1+ GPU heatsink off ebay and swapped it while redoing the heatsink compound on both the CPU and GPU. I also got rid of the dead clock cap - fortunately it hadn't leaked much. My plans for the 1.0 is to TSOP it eventually (I bought a conductive pen and have connected the necessary traces) - I still need to figure out what firmware to run and whether I want to disable the DVD drive. I tried doing a pot tweak, it still won't read DVDs or Games, it seems to be ok reading CDs. It's great to see so many people still involved in the OG XBOX Modding scene!
  5. I've tried completely deleting XBMC4Gamers, clearing the cache, renaming my Games folder so it will be ignored, reinstalling XBMC4Gamers. It still won't load. Is there something stored in UDATA or TDATA that could be causing a problem?
  6. I installed a new instance of XBMC4Gamers (from Rocky5's extras app) into F:\Applications and ran the XBE from the file manager - it has the same issue - black screen comes up instead of the XBMC4Gamers loader and it then exits back to UnleashX. So it seems like it's not corrupt app files, but something in the startup routine that is not happy. Does it store a shared config in a savefile? Is there any logging done at startup that I can look at - if so where can I find it? @Rocky5 any pointers would be appreciated.
  7. I have a softmodded 1.6 XBOX with Rocky5 1.1.9, I have the Softmod (UnleashX) dash as default and XBMC4Gamers (latest version - updated after installing) and XBMC-Emustation installed as Apps in E:\Applications. I have a 2TB HD with F & G evenly split at just under 1TB each. G is blank, I've been FTPing games into F:\Games Everything's been working great, I'll upload a batch of games, load XBMC4Gamers, run the artwork update script, then check out the Games section. Afterwards I'll load XBMC-Emustation and rescan the games, then check out the XBOX games listing. Tonight, after finishing another small batch of games, I went to do the same procedure above except this time when launching XBMC4Gamers, it shows a blank screen instead of the XBMC4Gamers logo. LED changes the color I set for that dash - so it's trying to load. It then exits back to UnleashX (or actually probably boots back to UnleashX). I've tried powering down / rebooting a few times, booting straight into XBMC4Gamers (using a Dashloader Customizer button), etc. XBMC-Emustation has no issue loading. I also tried launching XBMC4Gamers from the file manager directly, same issue - black screen, then back to UnleashX Extra info, not sure if it's relevant (seems like it shouldn't matter) I have 255 game folders in F:\Games, E:\UDATA\ has 256 folders. I auto-login to my only user created profile on XBMC4Gamers. The only thing that changed between XBMC4Gamers working and not loading anymore was FTPing more games into F:\Games. Are there any weird limits of folders or anything like that? Can the XBMC4Gamers XBE or any files needs to load get corrupted? I'm at a loss why it would suddenly just stop loading? I looked in the e:\applications\xbmc4games\system\xbmc.log and there are no new entries since the last time I played a game in XBMC4Gamers
  8. Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for. The FTP option in that app worked great.
  9. The 40 character limit may be accurate (and is useful info - thank you), but the editor is more restrictive that that (which seems like a bug - and why I need a different tool to make this edit) The Unleash XBE Title Editor prevents me from adding any charters after "Star Wars - Knights of the old Repub" - so I can't even set it to what the file originally had using that editor. i.e. it appears to enforce a 36 character limit.
  10. I have Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic and Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic 2 installed in Games on my F drive. Evidently they both have the same title in the XBE (Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic) which means that Unleash only shows one game in the GAMES and XBMC-Emustation shows KOTR 2 as a duplicate title (Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic (duplicate) - even though the game scanner shows the correct title when scanning). Through searching, I read that this because the default.xbe for both games has the same title info and that the easiest way to update it is to go into the file manager on Unleash, click the white button and choose the option to edit the Game title - which works (I can change the title and it will show up in both dashboards) but has a problem - the interface limits the number of characters you can use to a smaller value than the length of the title for these games. Like if you blank out the title, you can't even put the full original title back in - it's too long for the (apparently artificial character length limit the Unleash file explorer imposes). All I want to be able to do is to change the title for the second game from "Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic" to "Star Wars - Knights of the old Republic 2" which matches the artwork, synopsis, etc. So my question is whether there are any other on-xbox (or PC-based) tools / applications that will let you edit the game title in the default.xbe without this character limit?
  11. Update: I bought a $15 Warmstor USB 2.0 Adapter (uses JMicron) from Amazon. (Kaos' original advice - thank you) I plugged in the drive to FATXplorer and it immediately recognized the drive it but said it couldn't use the master password to unlock. This was a bit surprising - it's a 1.0 xbox, is it a known issue that the master password doesn't work for some WD drives? I hooked the drive back up to the XBOX and did a hotsawp - it worked the first time, I was able to install Rocky5 Softmod on Partition 3 and then unmount in FATXporer and reboot in the XBOX, Softmod worked without hitch, nulled (all 1s) the EEPROM, Success! Lesson learned: Don't waste time trying to get the Innostor IS611 adapter to work, that thing just doesn't work right for IDE. @Kaos To answer your questions, just in case you are still curious. Yes, dev/sdb was the correct drive (physical drive 1), the order of the -d doesn't matter (I did try it both ways) and as I mentioned above, after flashing the -g security command started returning the status correctly for that drive. Side note: as I mentioned earlier the SATA side worked correctly (even before the firmware update) when I set up a 2TB drive (for an already softmodded xbox) using xboxhdm23usb and the command line tools to lock it (-d sat)). So it appears the IDE interface of the adapter/firmware has the issue - although it didn't matter much if the master password doesn't appear to work for this drive making hotswap he only way to do it, and that absolutely didn't work with this adapter.
  12. smartctl.exe -s security-unlock,"WDCWDCDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD" /dev/sdb -d sat,12 PASSWORD WDCWDCDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-w64-mingw32-win8] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org ATA SECURITY UNLOCK failed: scsi error medium or hardware error (serious) I tried again with the different params (and fixed the password to the one above, I had cut paste the other from a reddit post of yours that had a W missing on the 3rd WDC https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/t6koy7/unlock_hdd/). smartctl.exe -s security-unlock,"WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD" /dev/sdb -d sat,12 PASSWORD WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-w64-mingw32-win8] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org ATA SECURITY UNLOCK failed: scsi error medium or hardware error (serious)
  13. Yes, Molex from XBOX is plugged in the whole time (and XBOX stays on the whole time).
  14. So I was able to update the firmware, FATExplorer doesn't work (as far as I can tell) since you can't set sat,12 and regular sat doesn't work. Through the command line: smartctl.exe -g security /dev/sdb -d sat,12 ATA Security is: ENABLED, PW level HIGH, **LOCKED** [SEC4] however trying to unlock isn't working smartctl.exe -g security-unlock,WDCWDCDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD /dev/sdb -d sat,12 PASSWORD WDCWDCDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-w64-mingw32-win8] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org ATA SECURITY UNLOCK failed: scsi error medium or hardware error (serious) When I hotswap, it always seems to report that it's still locked. The moment I unplug the IDE from the XBOX, the hard drive makes a click, when I plug it in to the ide usb it spins back up - don't know if that's normal or not - I can't figure out if turning on the IDE adapter is somehow resetting the harddrive.
  15. Ah I see you saw the USBView report in my original post (through reading your helpful answers elsewhere I anticipated you would ask) and you linked the notes from the compatibility table (I didn't know this existed). I'm going to have to try to do that firmware update to see if I can get the IDE side working - fingers crossed. The SATA side worked with a 2TB hard drive that I set up and locked for a nulled xbox using xboxhdm23usb.
  16. Yes that's how I'm doing the hotswap. Boot the XBOX with the DVD connected via IDE and power unplugged, HD connected by IDE and powered by the XBOX, when I get error 12, pull out the IDE connector from the HD, connect the HD to my USB IDE adapter, turn on the USB adapter (which connects it to windows), query the device in FATXplorer (which the logs show it identifies the device). PS: I've tried it with the USB Adapter already on too, that doesn't work either - shows it as a generic usb drive and complains it can't send IOCTL commands.
  17. Appreciate the quick response, Yes that's the procedure I'm using. The whole point of the hotswap is to have the drive unlocked (since we can't know the EEPROM on an unmodded xbox) - correct? So whatever bug there is with a locked drive shouldn't apply, right? I did try choosing all the options in the hdd security tool SAT, JMicron, Prolific, Sunplus gave the error: Failed to check status of WDC WD80 EB-28CGH1 USB Device. Command is unsupported. Cypress said Read device identity failed: Unknown error.
  18. I'm trying to softmod an old OG Xbox by doing a hotswap (since the DVD drive can't read games) on the original 8GB WD harddrive. I'm using "Amazon's Choice" usb adapter for whatever that's worth. Inateck USB 3.0 to IDE/SATA External Hard Drive Reader Applicable to 2.5"/3.5" HDD/SSD, with 12V/2A Power Supply, SA03001 https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-External-Reader-Applicable-SA03001/dp/B08BNPXSJ9 I can't tell if a) this adapter isn't supported or b) I'm not getting lucky (timing wise) with the hotswap keeping the drive unlocked. Any help is appreciated! If I use USB View it shows the device as: Loc[124] DeviceConnected: USB Mass Storage Device Device Descriptor: bcdUSB: 0x0300 bDeviceClass: 0x00 bDeviceSubClass: 0x00 bDeviceProtocol: 0x00 bMaxPacketSize0: 0x09 (9) idVendor: 0x1F75 idProduct: 0x0611 bcdDevice: 0x0006 iManufacturer: 0x04 0x0409: " When I try to see the device in FATXPlorer I get the following log: =====FATXplorer v3.0.0.24789 64-bit (x64) Log File START===== Runtime: .NET 7.0.3 OS Fingerprint: 3047bb3539608b94e41b5d78e5d1bc137edd101800e5ae889a3164cec688de07 [3/11/2023 4:19:13 PM] [Startup] FATXplorer is starting...
