About Me

  1. I was looking at the typical Aladdin XT 2 Plus modchips that are still available/being produced for the Xbox a while ago, and I thought to myself that the wiring to permanently ground the BT pad seemed a little inelegant. I took a quick look at the traces on the PCB and lo and behold, they trace back to adjacent pins on the Lattice CPLD chip! Going forward should I ever need to install another XT 2 Plus, I'll forego the wire and just bridge those two pins.
  2. As I've been TSOPing and chipping recently using customised BIOS I thought it would be a good idea to add the MD5 hash info to all the programs that can make use it: XBMC, EvoX and, of course, BIOS Checker. All three have slightly different syntax requirements apparently but whatever I did I couldn't get BIOS Checker to recognise the custom BIOS I'd added. The cause and solution turned out to be very simple: I was pasting in the MD5 code from EVTool, which has an option to copy it to the clipboard. Sensibly it uses lower case letters in the ID string and after half a day wasted, thinking I'd made some syntax mistake, that was the problem. BIOS Checker does not recognise lower case letters. It will report the correct MD5 hash but say the BIOS is unknown until you change them all to upper case. I'm sure somebody must have noticed this 'quirk' before but I couldn't find anything about it so I thought it worth posting about it here.
  3. I guess I should have posted here first. My first softmod job was a 1.0 Bert and Ernie. That Xbox had a non-modded LG DVD in it. At the time, you couldn't upgrade a softmod hard drive. I come from the PS1 mod chip era, and spent a lot of time in the Dreamcast community. The Xbox was the next logical step that blew the doors wide open. Fast forward to last year. I bought six consoles with various hardware problems (Samsung stuck trays, Philips and Thompson drive failures, caps etc..) and jumped back on the net to look up X-S and get my bearings back. I was shocked that it was gone. I found Rocky5's softmod package, watched some Youtube videos, and was literally blown away by how far things have come. Xbox isn't a niche console like the Dreamcast. It's a fantastic piece of hardware that has much promise. Here's hoping I can donate some info along the way. Cheers and thanks for having me.
